CBRL Kenyon Institute

CBRL Kenyon Institute The Kenyon Institute is an academic research centre in East Jerusalem.

CBRL Kenyon Institute is a learned society working with the countries, peoples and societies of the Levant to advance public education through promoting and disseminating research in the humanities, social sciences and related subjects. As a British Academy sponsored institution, operating under the umbrella of the Council for British Research in the Levant (CBRL), the Kenyon has become a hub for

local and international researchers from a diversity of fields. Based the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, the institute is one of the leading academic centres in the region, seeking to serve both British scholarship and the local academic community. The Kenyon, which was officially launched in 2001, has sought to build on the rich legacy of the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem (BSAJ) which has a much longer history, having been established in 1919. Thus, while incorporating the activities of the BSAJ, the Kenyon has expanded to cater for the humanities, social sciences and all the fields supported by the British Academy.

What stories are hidden in old letters, photographs, and field notebooks? And what can they tell us about the women who helped shape archaeology and heritage work across the Levant and beyond? 🔍✨

In Episode 11 of Learning from the Levant, Shatha Mubaideen is joined by Eman Shahin and Alice Lubbock to discuss the BIRI project Women Transcending Boundaries. Drawing on the archives of the British International Research Institutes (BIRI), the project uncovers the interconnected lives of women whose contributions to archaeology and heritage have often been overlooked.

Through personal writings, correspondence, photographs, and field notes, the conversation reveals a rich history of collaboration, knowledge exchange, and resilience that crossed borders and generations.
