Riding near Beit Shemesh — and what's around me is anything but a desert.

But here's something most people don't know about these forests — every single tree is less than 100 years old. All of Israel was reforested in the last century. What you're looking at was planted by hand, hill by hill, tree by tree.

Look a little closer and you'll also notice the dead ones. Pine beetle blight has wiped out a significant number of trees over the last 20 years — a real loss after 80 years of growth.

But what remains is extraordinary. Networks of trails open to everyone. Public land. Miles of riding and hiking right outside the city.

This is exactly the kind of terrain the future OLT farm will have access to. Boys on horses. Open trails. Wide open space. 🌿

At OLT, the boys harvested river cane, carved it into working sporks, built a fire, boiled water, cooked noodles, and ate using tools they made themselves.
