We’re halfway through our excavation season — and what a fantastic first half it has been ⛏️

So far, we’ve uncovered Persian-period silos and pits, an impressive number of Phoenician transport jars and Cypriot imports from the Iron Age, and, perhaps most unexpectedly, a destruction layer dating to the end of the Late Bronze Age / beginning of the Iron Age, packed with many collared-rim pithoi 🔥🤯🧨

Wonderful people, lots of fun, and plenty of exciting discoveries already. And we still have two more weeks to go⛏️

What else is waiting for us beneath the surface? 👀

The 2026 excavation season at Tel Hannathon has begun! ⛏️☀️🏺

מה קרה בגליל לאחר חורבנה של ממלכת ישראל?

בשלהי המאה השמינית לפנה״ס כבשה האימפריה האשורית חלקים נרחבים מן הלבנט והביאה להתמוטטותן של ממלכות חשובות באזור, ובהן גם ממלכת ישראל. חנתון הקדומה, ששכנה על דרך מסחר מרכזית בגליל התחתון, נקלעה אף היא למערבולת האירועים ונכבשה, ככל הנראה, בשנת 733 לפנה״ס בקירוב.

אבל סיפורה של חנתון לא הסתיים בכיבוש.

החפירות החדשות בתל אל־בדוויה, המזוהה עם חנתון הקדומה, חושפות לראשונה עדויות לחידוש ההתיישבות במקום במאות שלאחר מכן. הממצאים מספרים על חיים שהתחדשו תחת שלטונן של האימפריות האשורית, המצרית, הבבלית והפרסית, ומאפשרים להתבונן מחדש בתולדות הגליל לאחר חורבנה של ממלכת ישראל.

בהרצאת הזום (החינמית) „כשמלך אשור ביקר בגליל” ייקח אותנו ד״ר אסף קליימן מאוניברסיטת בן־גוריון בנגב למסע אל העיר הקדומה, אל התקופה הסוערת שבה השתנה האזור כולו ואל התגליות החדשות שמאירות פרק מוכר פחות בתולדות הגליל.

ההרצאה מתקיימת לקראת פתיחת עונת החפירות בתל חנתון.

Warm congratulations to Doron Jamchi, who has been a member of the Hannathon Project since 2025, on receiving the Dean’s Certificate of Excellence from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences for outstanding academic achievements in his M.A. studies. 🏺

Doron’s thesis, written under the supervision of Dr. Assaf Kleiman, examines connectivity between different settlements in northern Israel through a detailed study of Phoenician transport jars found both on mounds, especially at Tel el-Badawiya (Hannathon), and in surveys conducted in the rural hinterland of the Megiddo Province. His research explores the recovery of the economic system in the northern valleys under Assyrian imperial rule following the destruction of the Kingdom of Israel, as well as the integration of rural communities within this system, rural–urban relations, and trade connections with settlements along the Lebanese coast.

Roi’s research project, written under the supervision of Prof. Gunnar Lehmann and Dr. Assaf Kleiman, explores patterns of waste disposal in the Western Galilee during the Persian period, focusing on the case studies of Tel el-Badawiya (Hannathon) and Tell Keisan. By examining pits used for waste disposal, the study opens a window onto a broader phenomenon: the presence of pits at certain sites from this period whose original purpose remains unclear.
