Mercy CanSat MASA

Mercy CanSat    MASA Hi! We are St. Mary's Cansat team, a group of four 5th years under the guidance of physics teacher, What is CanSat?

A CanSat is a simulation of a real satellite, integrated within the volume and shape of a regular soft drink can. Our challenge is to fit all the major subsystems found in a satellite such as power and communications into a soda can of 350ml. After release from a rocket or a captive balloon the CanSat has to perform a certain mission and land safety on the ground. About the Competition

mpetition offers the opportunity to high-school and university students to have a first experience of a real space mission starting with design, through integration, testing, launching, data analysis and presentation of results. It is also a good platform for developing skills, both general (e.g. scientific enquiry, technical design, data analysis and presentation, teamwork) and practical (e.g. soldering, building electronics, software programming, testing). The first CanSat competition was held in 1999 in United States and since then many competitions have taken place around the world and during recent years in Europe. Several ESA Member States as the Netherlands, France, Spain and Norway have recently initiated CanSat competitions for high school and university students.

We decided that we should make our own parachute instead of the one we received in the pack. We used the website www.nakka-rocktry.net to work out the size of the parachute using formulae provided. Sewing proved to be a challenge but we are very happy with the result

In order to promote the CanSat Competition to a wider audience and to keep our followers within the school community updated on our progress, we asked our school principal to mention our cansat project in the midterm newsletter. Thankfully he agreed, which means that every student and their parents are now updated and aware of the competition.

Congratulations to Eva Duhig, the winner of our 'Name the Can' competition! It was a really tough few days choosing just one winner, but we can finally say that our can is named Lady Ada Lovelace! We chose this name as Lady Ada is known for writing the world's first machine algorithm. We find her work as a woman in science highly inspirational and a great role model for all women in science and STEM subjects. Hopefully she'll bring us luck in the Leinster finals!

Over the last few days we hosted a 'Name the Can' competition within our school. Those who entered the competition received a lollipop in return. We are overwhelmed with the number of entries we received and will definitely have a hard time choosing just one winner! Last week, the CanSat team made their way up to Dublin to explore the BT Young Scientist Exhibition which took place in the RDS. Hi everyone!โ˜บ๏ธ St. Mary's has decided to enter a CanSat team again this year. Comprising of four fifth years, and our sixth year consultants from last years team, we are really looking forward to this years competition. We have had number of meetings this year already and we felt it was time to interact with our supporters on social media sites. We ask for your continued support for this years team.

The team consists of Kate Murphy, Michelle Doherty, Kate Dowling and Cecilia Roche, and our consultants include Deirdre Donohue and Chloe Foxe, both members of last years CanSat team. We look forward to your support and will be updating you on our actions throughout the year!
