OSAMI Project (Orchestral Sound & Movement Improvisation) OSAMI is a music and dance improvisation project between County Wexford Youth Orchestra (CWYO), composer Laura Hyland and choreographer Deirdre Grant.

Funded by Create/Arts Council Artist In the Community Grant. Sound and movement are inextricably linked, both in Music and in Dance. Traditionally however, Musician and Dancer are perceived as separate entities. This project explores the idea that the movement inherent in playing an instrument can be extended into the realm of dance, and conversely, that the focus on physical gesture inherent in d

ance, when applied to an instrument, elicits new ways of playing. By exploring their physical and aural interaction with their instruments, each other, and the space they inhabit, participants shift their focus from ‘Playing Music’ to ‘Exploring Sound and Movement’. In the context of an orchestra, this shift of focus changes orchestral practices and consequently, the notion of what an orchestra can be. The artists will facilitate 12 improvisation workshops with CWYO over a period of 7 months, through which participants will devise their own performance, to take place at Wexford Opera House at the CWSM Showcase on May 31st 2012.
