Parenting an Only Childπ¨βπ©βπ¦
A small family differs dramatically from a large one and comes with a different set of challenges and rewards. Here are our top tips for raising an only child.
Encourage interaction with others
It does not matter how much attention you lavish on your only child, sometimes they just need someone their own age to relate to. Socialization is a key part of a child's life, so provide opportunities for your child to mix and mingle with trips to the park, and when restrictions are lifted arrange play dates for your child.
Lead by example
Only children don't experience the rough and tumble of sibling relationships. This can make things like losing a game, waiting a turn and joining a group difficult for an only child. To help a child succeed in these situations parents should demonstrate by example how to share, compromise, and show consideration for others. If you see your child being considerate reward them with lots of praise.
Keep gifts in check
When only children are bombarded with gifts and rewards, they get the message 'I always get what I want'. It is never too late to curb gift giving. Emotional outbursts will follow but taking this stand will be beneficial in the long run.
While raising an only child you probably cater for their every need. In contrast children with siblings need to wait in line to have their needs met. To help with this, parents can-set limits, delay gratification, stick to household rules and instill discipline through guidelines and expectations.
