Pursuing our goals and solving problems almost always requires entering our discomfort zone - showing up differently, doing different things to achieve different results.

And naturally, there are ‘traps’ that we can fall into that get in the way of solving our problems.

One of these traps is not knowing what we want.

When it comes to improving the odds of taking action it’s important to get clear on our desired outcome and the result from achieving it.

Think about what you want (what you really, really want). What is your vision for yourself personally? Professionally? In business? What is truly most important to you?

Write it down. Writing it down helps to focus and reinforce your higher values and desires. It reminds you why you’re skipping those tempting short-term impulses.

Having and communicating a clear vision is a key leadership skill. To discover your personal leadership profile, contact [email protected]

We have all had new problems to solve during COVID19.
Some of these problems are quickly solved with analysis and rigorous examination. Others, however, are more stubborn to unravel.
If you are stuck or stymied by a dilemma, you may be overthinking it. The analytical mind can be a wonderful thing…and it can also work itself into tangled frenzy of information. When this happens, the best thing to do is STOP and clear your mind.
The next time you are paralysed by indecision, stop and experiment with these three steps.
1. Pose A Question to Yourself such as
• “How can I solve this in the most effective, efficient way?”
• “What can I personally do to make this better?”
2. Relax and Receive
Rather than jumping to answer these questions, simply breathe into them, set a timer, close your eyes, and rest for 5 minutes. Notice the answers, thoughts and images that come to mind, as if you were watching clouds pass in the sky. No grasping, just observing. Don’t decide in this moment. Just let the thoughts come and go.
3. Record Your Findings
After 5 minutes, open your eyes and write down whatever you remember. Your subconscious mind has an ability to put things together for you. By writing down the thoughts from your rest, you will be able to decipher them, and an answer often surfaces.
Stress is not an optimum problem solving state. A relaxed mind is a creative mind, and a creative mind can solve any problem.

What Problem Can You Solve Today?

When you are talking to a customer, patient or staff member do you make them feel that you really care about them? Author and Teacher, Richard Moss says “The greatest gift you can give another is the purity of your attention.”When talking with others, here are a few things you can do to let people know you care:

Ask open ended questions that start with words like, "What' and "How."
Repeat back what they have said so they feel that they have been heard and understood.
Don’t interrupt.
Show that you are listening by nodding your head, smiling and making affirming statements like "I see" or "yes."
Make solid eye contact and don’t let your eyes wander.
And keep the conversation on them.

The pay off for developing these disciplines is big because you’ve made someone else feel special, and you feel great about doing something good for someone else. The impact on teams, customers, families and friends is immense

Effective Communication Means Understanding. It Means Having a Connection. It Means Demonstrating Empathy.
Why is effective communication so powerful? The answer to that question can be found in a quote by Kim Krizan from the movie "Waking Life."
"Language comes from our desire to move beyond our isolation and have some sort of connection with one another. Words by themselves are lifeless, they're inert. They're nothing more than symbols. So much of our experience is intangible; so much of what we perceive cannot be adequately expressed. And because of that, when we communicate with one another, and we feel we've connected, that we're understood—it's almost like having a spiritual communion with that person."
What we all want from one another is to connect. When we connect, we feel a special affinity with the person who we believe really understands us.
Communication is how your message is delivered and how it is received.
It is two-way, involving both the sender, and the receiver.
Effective communication involves not only words, but your body language, what "voice" you use, and the art of listening.

Demonstrating Empathy is the 'E' at the heart of 4FrontPharmacy's STEPS Framework. To learn more, go to www.4FrontPharmacy.ie or email [email protected]

Choose To Be Successful. Whatever dream you want to pursue, you have to choose it first. Recognise that you have a choice in all things, and choose the option that feels the most like success...then pour every ounce of energy you have into it.

What Sends Your Message More Effectively than the Words You Speak?
Non-verbal communication.
What you really believe is shown more clearly with your body posture, your facial expressions and your gestures than with your words.
If your words say one thing but your posture or gestures say another, your listener will see a disconnect. For example, when you meet someone who is sitting slumped down and unsmiling and you ask them "How are you?" You already know the answer to that question even if they respond with "I'm fine."
In fact, one look or facial expression can convey more than a whole book of words - a raised eyebrow, a "piercing" glance, a pout, a slow grin, wrinkling your nose!
How aware are you of the non-verbal signals you convey when you communicate? Here's an interesting experiment. (I know as I have to listen to myself on audio and video to quality assure our pharmacy training on www.4FrontPharmacy.ie)
1. Record yourself on video talking about a topic for 1 minute
2. Watch the recording with the SOUND turned OFF. What messages are conveyed in your body posture, your facial expressions and your gestures?
3. Listen back to the recording with the VIDEO turned OFF. What messages are conveyed in your tone of voice?
4. Share your learnings in the comments below!

Paraphrasing is a Key Strategy to Ensure You Understand What the Other Person is Saying
Paraphrasing back what you have heard is one of the best ways to avoid miscommunication and to clarify if you have understood what it is they were trying to communicate. When paraphrasing back what someone has said, you are not agreeing or disagreeing with what was said, only that it was said.
Paraphrasing back has an added benefit of priming your memory: For example:
"So, Mrs. Smith, if I understand you correctly, you are a carer for your elderly parents, and you are looking for their medicine to be blister packed so that your parents can continue to live at home? Is that right?"
You will have a better chance of remembering who Mrs. Smith was and what she is looking for.
If you paraphrase back and that is not the message they intended to convey, they now have an opportunity to correct: "No, I'm not a carer for my parents, but I AM looking for their medicines to be blister packed so that my parents can continue to live at home as I am worried they about their safety."
Paraphrasing back:
• Tells the person that what they have to say is important to you
• Helps you to remember details of the conversation later
• Helps to avoid a misunderstanding of what was said

Asking Questions is a Key Strategy to Ensure You Understand What the Other Person is Saying.
‘Questioning' is important because it keeps the conversation alive, and conveys to the speaker that we are interested and engaged.
There are two types of questions which are critical to check that the message intended is, in fact, the message received.
1. Open-ended questions – These are questions that cannot be answered with a simple ‘yes' or ‘no'. They are great for gathering information, encouraging a more meaningful answer and demonstrating genuine care and interest. Open ended questions usually start with the words ‘what' or ‘how'.
2. Clarifying questions - These are questions we ask when we are unclear about stories, words, or message that the speaker is conveying. By asking ‘clarifying questions,' we are ‘clarifying' that we understand what is being communicated. We are not agreeing nor disagreeing with what has been said to us, just seeking clarification.
By asking questions and paraphrasing back what you are hearing, you will reduce the risk of costly miscommunication.
Use questions to Seek To Understand Them First. As you actively listen to their answers, they will feel heard, understood and valued, and THEN be far more likely to listen to you!

The practice of gratitude as a tool for happiness has been in the mainstream for years. Long-term studies support gratitude’s effectiveness, suggesting that a positive, appreciative attitude contributes to greater success in work, greater health, peak performance in sports and business, a higher sense of well-being, and a faster rate of recovery from surgery.

That’s why practicinggratitude makes so much sense. When we practice giving thanks for all we have, instead of complaining about what we lack, we give ourselves the chance to see all of life as an opportunity and a blessing.

4FrontPharmacy.ie was named 'Educational Project of the Year in General Practice / Pharmacy.'

100% produced and hosted in Ireland, this leading-edge online educational platform has been designed by pharmacists for pharmacy teams. With a leadership team experienced in the field of digital CPD for healthcare, its use has been proven to increase sales, increase PSI compliance and and reduce the risk of pharmacy errors, by improving the quality of the pharmacy / patient interaction.

4FrontPharmacy CEO Rachel Dungan MPSI wants to get this resource into the hands of every pharmacy team, so that 'we leverage the amazing opportunity we have to transform healthcare at communities through community pharmacy.'

The flip-side, she said, was unnecessary risk to patient safety, regulatory non-compliance and loss of revenue, through poorer quality, complacent consultations and/or incorrect product supply.

David McLean, co-founder 4FrontPharmacy.ie highlighted that customers deserve and expect as high quality, professional service from the Saturday girl as they do from full-time staff. 'Because 4FrontPharmacy.ie is a cloud-based learning platform, staff can be trained, assessed and validated from any device, from anywhere with an internet connection. It is a simple 3-step process. Login. Press play. Complete quiz. The only way not to get value is to not use it.' The judges agreed!

How to Communicate with More Impact and Influence

There is a tremendous difference between talking and communicating.
Communicating with power and influence is a skill that can and must be mastered by everyone working in healthcare. Lives depend on it.

Healthcare workers who master this skill use it to:
• Deepen their relationships with colleagues & patients
• Further their professional careers
• Create more influence & impact
• Successfully market their value

In fact, if you master the skills we teach in 4FrontPharmacy's STEPS Framework you will show up as a powerful communicator, in the conversations that matter - such as patient consultations and team meetings.

If you are not the most influential person you know right now, there is room for improvement. Don't sit back or moan about your lack of impact. Do something about it! Influence is a skill that can always be developed further. Like any skill, the more intentionally you practice, the better you will be at it and the bigger the impact you will have with your patients, colleagues and within your community.
4FrontPharmacy's STEPS Framework forms the backbone of our consultation skills, leadership and conflict resolution trainings. To find out more go to www.4frontpharmacy.ie
