The first impressions of Waterford from the train and car are usually of the south bank. Critically aware of this the South Bank group proposed large scale interesting buildings with an impressive velodrome, a machine tool hall and sports research centre. To coincide with the new velodrome a series of cycle routes were devised to give greater emphasis on cycling in and around the city.

The Ard na Rí group were positioned along Sion Hill and proposed pedestrian walkways through the landscape overlooking the city. New routes along replanted and lush landscape was their main urban vision. A new lift connects the north bank to the top of the hill so people from the city and from the train can gain access to the hillside.

The vacant, underused North Quay was re-imagined as a productive industrial city with buildings such as a Ray-Ban factory, a Fab-Lab, water treatment facility, brewing community, Amazon warehouse and cruise liner terminal. A new pedestrian loop was also envisaged with new pedestrian bridges and spaces to enjoy the river's edge.

The City Quay group wanted to redefine the skyline of Waterford with an impressive tower and striking hotel. It is in an effort to give the south quays a face-lift as a new center of industry, while an urban strategy looks to permeate the quay facing blocks.

An urban promenade along the river's flood plain is the centerpiece of the St John's river group. An urban character is created through a series of walkways and public spaces accompanied by the planting of 5 specific species of tree. Proposed along this route are co-working spaces, a bespoke yacht factory, an unemployment and leisure centre, a YouTube space, a new urban block and the Waterford Exchange.

The Social Quarter group want to give back to the people of Waterford. Extending the current pedestrian spaces while restoring and repairing abandoned and neglected buildings. In their scheme each business has a duty to give back to the city in some way.

The Group based at Ballybricken in Waterford looked to revitalise an area that has become desolate and overwhelmed by traffic, in contrast to its past as a bustling commercial centre. They proposed a new playground, covered music venue and newly located green areas for the community.

Industria are excited to announce our return with an exhibition and symposium planned for Waterford City, as part of the Waterford Festival of Architecture, from the 15-17th of October. More details to follow soon!
In the build up for the exhibition we're publishing a selection of graduate work on our blog in the form of the Urban Groups, showing both their group proposals and individual projects. We start with The City Wall group.
The City Wall group are based in the medieval fabric of the city and intend to fold working life back into the heart of the declining city centre. They establish a new east-west pedestrian route which introduces new public spaces through the quarter.
