Have a listen to this recent podcast about our Social Science programme.

Programme lead Dr John McNamara outlines what Social Science is all about; drilling down into the various modules students do, and giving a flavour of the many and varied careers and further studies options available to graduates.

First year Social Science student Niamh Purcell and recent graduate Imelda Morrissey spoke about the course itself, highlighting how it helps students engage in critical thinking (crucial in today’s world). They also talk about how the programme fosters a sense of social justice in students and helps them view society from the perspectives of all social groups.

It was great to attend the Analysing Social Change research group seminar by our wonderful Social Science colleague Dr Hazel O’Brien today.

Dr O’Brien’s paper ‘Reduced Inequalities and Strong Institutions: The Role of the University in Race Equality’ (Dr Hazel O’Brien, Ms Monica Rudi Kent, Dr Pilar Luz Rodrigues), explored how can a university fulfil its future-focused goals whilst also responding to the ongoing needs of a local community and a changing social and political climate? The presentation focused on race equality, outlining key points of discussion and areas for future planning for universities who are seeking to reduce inequalities, strengthen their public institution, and to respond to current social and political climate.
