A lesson hard learned that the Leaving Certificate needs reform. I applaud Joe McHugh for making what was an unenviable announcement today. We were faced with an impossible choice between justifying the hard work, and maintaining healthy mental and physical states. I am heartbroken that my students will not be able to sit their exam, and earn their grade.
The reason is because my students range from students who failed the mocks, to students who stradded the line of a H2 and H1. School didn't see them reach that H1. Those who failed have put in monumental work since then and have turned a corner, but will that be seen and taken into consideration? It all remains to be seen, and schools have such an arduous task ahead of them. Those who choose not to accept the predicted grade will sit the examinations sometime, perhaps after Christmas, thereby missing the intake for 2020 third level.
There was no easy way to make the right choice, but the right choice must always be the mental and physical health of our young minds. I have seen every scratch of the pen on the page, in some cases over a period of 5 years, I know what battles were overcome, from undiagnosed dyslexia to mental health and family circumstances, and I follow all of their stories with such genuine interest and concern for many years ahead. Please know that I am more than happy to talk to any student with any queries at any stage.
[04/10/20] I welcome the news that the Leaving Certificate has been postponed but will still take place. Students have worked so hard for so long, and what is always the longest possible year now seems even longer for 6th year students. However, having an opportunity to still sit the exams gives students that goal still and a fair chance to achieve their desired outcome. I am so sorry for those who worked so hard for the Junior Certificate, the skills learned this year will serve every single student going through to September. I admire the tenacity, determination and ambition of my own students, you will change the world with the hunger you now have for your future. I am here for any question, any time.

Sleep tonight with a light heart ahead of tomorrow's exam results. The door to the future is swinging wide open and it will open out onto the most wonderful and unexpected pathways. Never ever let your self belief or confidence be diminished because you are absolutely outstanding to have reached this day and against every obstacle, You Have Got This. Whether you attend college, university, institute of FE, embark overseas, decide to work or hold off for a while on decisions, everyone of those will open a door that is right for you. The world is enormous and jampacked with opportunities and excitement, wonder and the unknown. The unknown is my favourite because you cannot predict who you will be, only that the road is ahead. Your pathway may not be what you had planned but it opens the door to the beautiful unknown. "All I know is a door into the dark"- Seamus Heaney.

A very pleasant paper for OL English. Bishop and Kennelly were common to both HL and OL. Favourable Macbeth questions. A pleasant paper overall.
Paper 2 for HL is a mixture of challenging elements. The Macbeth question may have initially surprised some but close reading will be rewarded. Literary Genre as expected was there and Kennelly was a welcomed addition, this first year on the course. Plath was widely anticipated so many students will be thanking all of those candles which were lit 😂
Day Two of the Leaving Cert is bright and beautiful. Breakfast, rest and fighting fit for 2pm. 💪💪💪
A very challenging English Paper for Junior Cert HL. Studied texts were rewarded but the comprehensiveness of the questions would have made time management a challenge. An engaging paper but certainly more intensive than was expected. A beautiful Paul Durcan poem to open up.
A beautiful paper for Paper 1 HL English with the theme Feeding our Imaginations. As expected there was an opinion piece for QB and a speech and an introduction to a collection of essays, which all of my students would have been prepared for in the lead up. The Composition was a beautiful selection. A mixture of descriptive essay, personal essay, short story, speech and discursive piece. Students were nervous regarding the Comprehension question referring to a text and that anxiety would have been eased by the choice given this year regarding the questions. A very appealing, student led paper.
The Leaving Cert Class of 2019 are strong, determined and confident young minds. They were not always so confident, but that determination gave fire to their bellies and they roared forwards, transforming the timid humility to a fiery ability. I admire the way you all look at the world and the insights you have offered to me, in teaching you, have affected me and inspired me. The Leaving Certificate does not offer an exam which recognises your kindness and your wonderful nature but it does assess your endurance, your spirit and it shows a genuine interest in your unique view of the world. Seize this opportunity and from tomorrow, burst open the walls of your exam centre with your exhuberance and confidence. You have made it, you have embarked on your new adventure and above all, you have made me so proud, genuinely so proud of you all. I am humbled to be your teacher and honoured that you have trusted me with your ideas, responses and confidence. I will remember every single one of you. Thank you x

[05/30/19] 2013 Stats show Ireland as being 6th highest in Europe for teenage suicides between ages 15-19. We need to consciously work with our students to increase their confidence and coping skills. We need them to believe in themselves and that all they have done is enough. #LeavingCert
[05/30/19] Between now and next Wednesday, it is of vital importance that students take one solid day off from studying and work. An intense exam period is imminent where students will have no downtime. A mental break is of such importance to combat anxiety, stress and possible burnout and to recoup before Wednesday. I encourage all students to do this.
[05/28/19] Do students feel that there is enough awareness and support in schools regarding anxiety, depression and exam stress.
