Meet Sam Garbutt, a Sports Coaching & Physical Education graduate of WCFE 2026.
Sam is starting his course in UCC to study PE & History. He kindly agreed to share his success story with us:
"I chose this PLC course as I didn’t achieve my goals in the Leaving Cert of studying PE teaching, I had a few options and I decided that this PLC would be my best option to attend UCC and study PE teaching.
What I enjoyed most about this course was it was an enjoyable way of learning, a lot of the time we were outside the college learning how to coach GAA and soccer and then putting it to practice by coaching local primary schools.
This course helped me prepare for my next step by providing me with lots of real teaching and coaching experience. I also learnt what is expected of me at third level and it helped me become more independent with my work.
From completing this course I have gained lots of coaching experience but I’ve also gained some valuable skills such as my communication skills and my overall confidence when coaching. I believe these will be useful to me as a PE teacher.

I would highly recommend a PLC to anyone who is looking to progress to university or a career in the sports industry, it’s a great opportunity. It helped me develop valuable skills which will make my time in university less stressful or overwhelming"

Waterford College Of Further Education is marking 120 years of excellence in education in the Southeast and we want to celebrate it with you!
We will be kicking off a year of festivities to celebrate our fantastic college with the WLR 'Deise Today' team on September 17th from 10am to midday, on our Parnell Street campus for tea and cake and YOU are invited!
We are inviting all former students and staff and members of the public to come and share your stories and memories with us as we celebrate this historic moment.
