Calmast

Centre for the Advancement of Learning of Maths, Science and Technology at Waterford Institute of Technology

Calmast, led by Sheila Donegan and Eoin Gill, was established in 2003 at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) to promote STEM. This followed considerable activity by WIT staff since the mid 1990s in promoting science and engineering on a national and international level. We have reached hundreds of thousands of people with science supplements, publications, STEM events and activities. Together with Waterford City and County Council, industry groups and schools we aim at developing Ireland’s Southeast as a Science Region with Waterford as the gateway city. Events include the Robert Boyle Science Festival (as part of National Science Week), Waterford Engineering Week (as part of National Engineers Week), the Robert Boyle Summer School and the Bealtaine Festival Celebrating Our Living Earth which incorporates International Day for Biological Diversity in May. In 2006, we founded Maths Week Ireland - the largest festival of its kind in the world: We have also participated in many international STEM festivals in Korea, China, Poland, Italy, Portugal, Czech Republic and the UK. Eoin Gill and Sheila Donegan are the only Irish recipients of the Descartes Award for Science Communication. They received the Engineers Ireland Inaugural Award for Science, Engineering and Technology Awareness in 2007.

Mission: We promote science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and we aim at developing Ireland’s Southeast as a Science Region.

WIT's Department of Science is running two hour lab sessions in Biology and Pharmaceutical Science on Saturday, 30 March 2019. These labs are specifically designed for anyone considering studying a lab science programme in September 2019. Booking essential.

Our Centre Manager and Native Scientist Project Manager for German in Ireland Cordula Weiß visited St Kilian's Deutsche Schule last week together with Jens, Mathias and Stefan from Trinity College Dublin where they all had a chat - in German - about their research projects and careers in #STEM. Really enjoyed the morning with the secondary school students!

Did you know fruit flies are brilliant to study brains and the nervous system? That implants can be 3D printed? Or that poisonous chemical substances can actually be good for you – in moderate doses of course? And have you ever used your tooth brush to make a robot?

This is what a group of students discussed in an engaging, fun and interactive Native Scientist workshop with scientists from Trinity College Dublin and Waterford Institute of Technology. On the 20th of March Stefan, Mathias, Jens and Cordula visited St Kilian’s German School Dublin where they spend a fantastic morning talking about their jobs, their research and their passion for science.

Thank you to all participants and the teachers and students at St Kilian’s German School Dublin. It was great fun!

Our Centre Manager Cordula Weiß had a great time at St Kilian's Deutsche Schule earlier this week where she ran a Native Scientist event with three German Trinity College Dublin scientists. Had a fantastic chat about 3D printed implants, poisonous substances that are actually good for you and fruit fly genetics - in German of course!

Thank you to Cordula, Jens, Stefan and Mathias, German scientists living in Ireland who visited St. Kilian’s on Wednesday to present their projects to our Sek-I students through German. This visit was organised through the Native Scientist initiative, a network of international scientists who promote science and language integrated learning on a voluntary basis. Our 8th and 9th class students enjoyed learning about scientific topics such as 3D printing and genetics in fruit flies.

140 years ago #onthisday one of the most famous theoretical physicists was born in Ulm, Germany. Guess which brilliant mind we're talking about?!
Albert Einstein - who is known for his originality and intellectual achievements. Bet most of you are thinking E=mc^2 and Theory of Relativity right now but Einstein contributed much more to physics, science and the philosophy of science and published more than 450 scientific and (!) non-scientific papers.
