Centre for the Advancement of Learning of Maths, Science and Technology at Waterford Institute of Technology
Calmast, led by Sheila Donegan and Eoin Gill, was established in 2003 at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) to promote STEM. This followed considerable activity by WIT staff since the mid 1990s in promoting science and engineering on a national and international level. We have reached hundreds of thousands of people with science supplements, publications, STEM events and activities. Together with Waterford City and County Council, industry groups and schools we aim at developing Ireland’s Southeast as a Science Region with Waterford as the gateway city. Events include the Robert Boyle Science Festival (as part of National Science Week), Waterford Engineering Week (as part of National Engineers Week), the Robert Boyle Summer School and the Bealtaine Festival Celebrating Our Living Earth which incorporates International Day for Biological Diversity in May. In 2006, we founded Maths Week Ireland - the largest festival of its kind in the world: We have also participated in many international STEM festivals in Korea, China, Poland, Italy, Portugal, Czech Republic and the UK. Eoin Gill and Sheila Donegan are the only Irish recipients of the Descartes Award for Science Communication. They received the Engineers Ireland Inaugural Award for Science, Engineering and Technology Awareness in 2007.
Mission: We promote science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and we aim at developing Ireland’s Southeast as a Science Region.

We’re celebrating #WorldWaterDay today!
A couple of weeks ago a group of amazing TY students from schools in Waterford, Tipperary, Wexford and Kilkenny developed an engineering workshop about clean water, explaining water treatment and sustainability. We hope we can bring this to you soon during Bealtaine Biodiversity Festival but for now we’d like to encourage everyone to use water efficiently, reasonably and thoughtfully. It’s a precious resource!

Happy #WorldWaterDay! 💦
This year we're focusing on water & #ClimateChange. By using water more efficiently, we can reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that drive #GlobalWarming. We all have a role to play!

Now here’s some inspiration and a true challenge for all staying at home! Brilliant engineering well applied 👍
Great initiative! The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens Tramore are an absolute must to visit! It's amazing what gems we have right here on our doorstep in the South-East.
The last two years, Keith has brought us on fantastic tours through the gardens as part of the Bealtaine Biodiversity Festival and we're still hoping to run this year's festival from 16 to 24 May - a reduced version most likely plus online events and activities.

Please enjoy a FREE ONLINE TOUR OF OUR GARDENS with our Tour Guide - Keith Guinan in advance of your visit. The gardens ARE OPEN and it is a beautiful space for a stroll in the peace and tranquility of our Japanese Gardens. There is plenty of open space to enable Social Distancing (please adhere to HSE regulation). The Office is not open and no handling of money will be in place. However we do have a donation box out and all donations are welcome to help towards the maintenance of the gardens at this difficult time, but not compulsory. First and foremost we are happy that you spend a relaxing time in our stunning gardens during these anxious weeks. This 3D medical animation explains what a pandemic is, rates of infection and ways to protect against infections. It also delves into the biology and mechanism of action (MoA) that coronavirus uses to infect and destroy human cells. Though the exact MoA for this coronavirus is not known.
We're facing unprecedented times at the moment. After extended discussions we have to decided to keep going and, for now, plan ahead for Bealtaine 2020. We will update this page and our website www.livingearth.ie regularly. Please note that the programme is subject to change in light of future advice from our public health services and events may be cancelled at short notice.
Thank you all for your understanding, please remember the priorities are to keep safe, be kind and support each other. We'd also like to thank all our supporters who made this festival possible in the past and, all going well, in the future.

Looks fantastic! Well done all! And what a sunny day you got for that ☀️
Absolutely delighted with how our second week went. We designed a maths, geography and sports trail which we tested out on the two fifth class groups from St Saviours NS today. During the hour and a quarter we carried out a survey, calculated area, completed various maths problems, learned about angles, lines, shapes, speed, percentages and fractions. We also used our class to get children out and active and walked ran and stretched our bodies!! We used compasses to find our way around and drew bar charts to present our results. And the weather cooperated too!!! Maybe we could measure wind speed and temperature too the next time. This is week two of our five week programme designed by our Young Social Innovators to help promote global, national and local goals Healthy Waterford Global Goals for Sustainable Development Healthy Ireland. Appreciate the support of Waterford Sports Partnership who are helping us to access rowing machines for week four and five and Calmast who helped us tweak our lesson plan for today. We are really happy that they think other schools could role out our programme too! Nice vote of confidence!! Looking forward to building on what we have covered in the last two weeks in our third session where we access and use local amenities of Waterford Council and make use of the permanent Waterford Orienteers course in the people’s park to consolidate and extend our geography maths and sports programme!
