Calmast
Centre for Advancement Learning of Maths, Science & Technology, South East Technological University
Calmast, led by Sheila Donegan and Eoin Gill, was established in 2003 at South East Technological University (SETU) to promote STEM. This followed considerable activity by SETU staff since the mid 1990s in promoting science and engineering on a national and international level. We have reached hundreds of thousands of people with science supplements, publications, STEM events and activities. Toget

We were proud to host a event in Waterford this year!
The evening was a roaring success - with engaging talks, a pub quiz, and an inquisitive audience. Looking forward to what will hopefully be a continuing collaboration with the Pint of Science Ireland organisers in years to come!
Speakers:
Rebekah Attard-Trevisan - Beyond the Lithium-Ion Empire
Tess Ames - Putting People at the Centre: Public and Patient Involvement in Vision Research
Dorsa Golestaneh - Instead of for people with dry eye disease, why not with them? A new way to have better treatments.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Harry Kroto, a scientist whose discovery of buckminsterfullerene (Cββ), launched modern nanotechnology research. With Robert Curl and Richard Smalley he identified the football shaped molecule made up of 60 carbon atoms and shared with them the chemistry Nobel prize 30 years ago. This work paved the way for carbon nanotubes and then graphene. But beyond his scientific achievements, he was a passionate advocate for science education and gave a lot of his expertise and energy promoting awareness, appreciation and understanding of science particularly to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
He gave great encouragement to Calmast in our early days recognising a shared mission of promoting curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. In 2005, he visited Waterford to talk to our students and children from local schools.
βIt was [Calmastβs] organisational skill and painstaking devotion to the promotion of science, engineering and technology (SET) that ensured that the children were able to get so much valuable scientific hands on experience and enjoyment and most importantly, the whole workshop went extremely smoothly with no hitches.β
Speaking in the Irish Times in 2005, he warned that "Science and technology are moving ahead very fast, but we are not developing social responsibility at the same pace. We are producing extremely powerful technologies and it seems to me that we still have a lot to learn about how to interact and how to get on with each other."

π οΈ Engineer Your Future πͺ
Calmast hosted 15 TY students for a day on sustainable engineering for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) EYF programme. This is part of the STEPs Engineers Ireland Engineer Your Future programme.
The group visited the machine workshops and additive manufacturing facilities at SETU in Waterford with Dr Paul Quinn and also viewed the construction of the new Engineering Building.
Students were then introduced to wind power with a workshop by lecturer Colm Tynan. Students explored the engineering challenges and opportunities in wind energy.
The day ended with a session on problem solving with Eoin Gill. Problem solving skills are essential for an engineering career and in the challenges that come up every day. A variety of puzzles ended the day on an engaging high note.
It was an excellent day to introduce TY students to the world of engineering in an engaging and inspiring way.
Engineers Ireland South East Technological University Calmast The South-East Engineering Festival
Weβre excited to share the Cyber Schools Initiative, a programme led by Calmast SETU STEM Engagement Centre, that brings the world of Cybersecurity to classrooms across Ireland. π»πΎ
This year, Transition Year students will receive a visit from a Cyber Security professional to kick off the 5 week programme. Through interactive, problem-solving activities, students will learn how to defend a hospital, encrypt data, and much more.
Cyber Security is an important topic for students to learn in our digital age. This initiative is intended to bring awareness and build a curiosity around Cybersecurity as a career.
Thank you to our partners and sponsors for helping bring this Initiative to schools nation-wide.

π§ Engineering is coming to the South East! The South East Engineering Festival returns 1β8 March.
Engineers combine science, maths, and computing with design thinking to create the things we depend on in the every day. During Engineers Fest, youβll get the opportunity to learn WHAT engineers do, and HOW they do it.
Keep your eyes out for the full programme, to be announced soon. π www.engfest.ie
