Waterford Taekwon-Do School

Taekwon-Do in Ireland didn’t just begin in 1972 when the Republic of Ireland Taekwon-Do Association was founded by First Grand Master Ki Ha Rhee. Our Senior Instructors were already training in 1967, with FGM Rhee coming over monthly to teach after just arriving to the UK from Singapore. Even before the RITA was founded Grand Master Robert J Howard, Master Liam Dandy and the late Mr Frank Matthews had received their Black Belts in Oxford 1971. Our new President Grand Master Anthony Phelan was awarded his black belt in 1973 which was the same year he opened a School in Waterford that our Vice President Grand Master Francis Barrett joined.

All our Senior Instructors can trace their heritage directly to General Choi in an unbroken line for the last 54 years!

Hello, parents, guardians and students just to remind you. We have been informed by the presentation school that from 11 January 2026 they are no longer hiring out the hall we currently use for Taekwon-Do, to say this is disappointing is an understatement. We are currently in the process of finding somewhere else to use on our return after the Christmas break. I ask you if you know of anyone who is in the position to rent us a new hall we would be grateful. I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very happy Christmas and a Happy New year. I hope to see you all again in 2026.

Today, 9th November, we celebrate the 107th anniversary of General Choi Hong HI’s birth. He was the founder of Taekwon-Do and was responsible for its spread throughout the world. Many never got the chance to meet General Choi but in the RITA all our senior Instructors have trained under him and continue his legacy. Lá breithe shona duit!

Members of the RITA’s National Squad visited Hanley Energy at their HQ in Stamullen, Co. Meath today. They presented Dennis Norden (Co-founder) with a signed T-Shirt from this year’s European Championships in Estonia. The squad also got to meet the Hanley Energy staff and got a tour of the state of the art facilities. Thank you to Hanley Energy for their continued support and we look forward to further success together.
