We’re thrilled to share that ACT Waterford, Calmast, South East Technological University and environmental artist Sean Corcoran have been shortlisted in the ESB Creative Sustainability Award category at the Business to Arts Awards for Crockery Mountain.

Crockery Mountain brought together over 150 volunteers across Waterford to transform over 10,000 pieces of donated pieces of crockery into a stunning 40 foot by 12 foot stunning mosaic, inspiring conversations about sustainability, creativity reuse and community action. The project demonstrated how the arts can engage people in climate action in meaningful ways.

A huge congratulations to everyone involved in making this project possible, and thank you to our partners Waterford City and County Council, our funders CreativeIrl, participants and supporters who helped bring this ambitious vision to life.

Great to be invited along with Sean Corcoran of The Art Hand to the launch of the South East Technological University sustainability strategy.

Sean brought along his wonderful Temporary Treasures mosaic making workshop paraphernalia and together our many hands created “ACT”, a reminder that we all have a role to play in taking action on climate change. 🌍

ACT Waterford was delighted to host Sean Corcoran’s Temporary Treasures workshop as part of the launch of SETU’s Sustainability Strategy.

Passers-by were invited to take some of the pieces of recycled materials to create a collaborative artwork revealing the word ACT.

This word was chosen as a call to action for us all to act for the environment and in support of our sustainability goals. However, this piece was only temporary, at the end of the session, it was taken apart, leaving only memories, photographs and a timelapse behind!

The thinking behind this workshop is it offers a mindful, hands-on experience that encourages creativity, environmental awareness, and a chance to reflect on our relationship with the things we own and why we own so much stuff! By transforming these recycled objects into something meaningful, to then just let them go, participants explored the idea that not everything needs to be kept to be valued.

On Tuesday, we were delighted to have the Mayor of Waterford, Cllr Seamus Ryan launch and unveil the CREATIVE CUBE in Carrickpheris Library, as part of the Between Land and Sea Creative Climate Action project, created by the students of Waterford YouthReach and Spraoi, Waterford.

This project celebrates Waterford’s coastline, marine ecosystems and the role of art in raising awareness and inspiring action.

It is a partnership with Calmast, SETU and Waterford City and County Council, funded by CreativeIrl

Tomorrow at 12 noon, tune in to WLR FM for the Crockery Mountain radio documentary, a behind the scenes listen to the making of our community mosaic under the direction of the talented environmental artist Sean Corcoran.

Airing on Easter Sunday, the documentary is produced by Aoibhin Fallon in WLR FM, funded by Creative Ireland.

Crockery Mountain was managed by ACT at Calmast, SETU in partnership with Waterford City and County Council

Yesterday, ACT creative Mollie Anna King gave a demonstration in Ballymacarbery Community hall on how sheep’s wool can be cleaned and used as natural insulation as part of How to Place-Based Insulate, a community-focused project in the Comeragh Mountains rethinking wool as a low-carbon, local building material.
Rooted in Irish heritage and farming knowledge, the project reconnected past practices with sustainable futures, showing how a once-valued resource now often treated as waste can play a role in climate-conscious construction.
