After a long battle "Times Past and Present, Lackagh National School 1886 - 2016" is at the printers. I have been privileged to have lead this project and thanks to all who supported us with this project to record many aspects of school life in over 150 pages, of the past 130 years.
An open invitation is being issued to all to join us on December 9th in Turloughmore Social Centre at 7pm. Hope as many as possible will be there with music song and dance on the night. Please feel free to share to get the word out. Frank Kearney

Thank you to everyone for attending the Parish Heritage Night. It was lovely to see some special photos of times past, especially the boys class of 1926 from Lackagh NS. Thank you to the parents for helping out, the 6th class for all their hard work on the night, our teachers & staff and especially Brendan Smith for being there & recording what will now always be available to everyone. If you have any photos or know of someone that may have, please bring them to Lackagh NS where they can be added to this important project. We are particularly looking for photos from the 1930s, 1940s & 1950s. Many thanks again.

Local Community Heritage Night. Nov 23rd, 7pm @ Lackagh NS.

You are cordially invited to take part in a special Local Community Heritage night being held at 7pm on Monday, November 23rd in Lackagh National School where you can meet up with former school friends or present day neighbours and enjoy a nice cup of tea and scone whilst viewing images and listening to stories of times past.
We are also asking all residents of the locality to bring along old photographs, films and memorabilia that will provide an interesting insight into life in Lackagh in days gone by.
So please check through your old family album, attic or wardrobe for those little gems of local history.
The images may be of your family, your neighbours and your friends together at a sports match, in school, attending a Communion, a dance or a wedding, of working in the bog, of bailing hay, feeding hens or of cycling to the village.
The photographs, films and stories recorded will be placed on a publicly accessible online digital heritage archive being established by Galway County Council, Galway Education Centre and the Insight Centre at NUI Galway.
The present day pupils will also be available to record stories from those present that would like to have their memories saved for posterity.
The aim of this fascinating project know as BEO (Irish for ‘Alive’) is for each participating school to become a major catalyst in the collecting, digitizing and online storage of rare material associated with its locality which otherwise would be lost to future generations. If successful, it will represent the biggest schools-based heritage project since The Folklore Commission of 1937.
Photographs from over 120 schools have already been uploaded thanks to the assistance of school, active retirement associations, community groups & GAA clubs.
We are looking forward to seeing you on November 23rd.
Best regards, Principal Michael Lydon.

Lackagh National School has mixed memories for many of its past pupils. However it was there that a formation of our education for life was put together and for many in previous generations it was the only formal education that young people received. Lackagh NS History project welcome memories of school days or photographs of school days or any other input that you feel are worth recording for future generations. Please feel free to contact the school or contact any of us with information or just to share a memory. Frank Kearney.
