Anybody would like a few Jerusalem artichokes?
They have nothing to do with Jerusalem nor are they artichokes. This plant belongs to the Helianthus/sunflower family and like our spud comes from South America. I have them growing since many years, but last year I didn't harvest most of them, so this year I have them in abundance.
They actually have serious health benefits as in blood sugar regulation and metabolic health, providing insulin,. potassium, iron, magnesium and vitamins. We like them roasted together with other veg, or as a soup ingredient and they can even be eaten raw.
Some people call them 'fartichokes' as they create wind ....
Let me know if you want to try them out....and I can share some.

That's a wrap up for September... nearly over and the shadows are getting longer...and so are the nights....along with early morning spiderwebs in the gorse bushes.
For me it is back to school again... One of the projects involved is a sustainability project with TY students here at St. Attracta's community school in Tubbercurry. While we are still at the planning phase we hope to progress over the coming weeks with the 'wellbeing garden' made by upcycling/recycling materials.
As a heritage in school specialist you can also book a visit by me for your local National school. https://heritagecouncil-sbs.azurewebsites.net/Forms/1f7bed4f-df9b-4beb-84b0-3d2e97e1da32
As an education facilitator I also enjoy working for the Rediscovery centre . You can check out their STEM and sustainability workshops on their website https://www.rediscoverycentre.ie/learn/primary-level-education-programme/or https://www.rediscoverycentre.ie/learn/secondary-level-education-programme/.
After the summer camps it is a privilege to meet many of the children in their local school environment. Even though the older ones I don't recognise straight away....being all grown up....

It's also wild berry season and important to know your wild food. When going for a walk down to the Moy I come across nice specimens of wild food...some are safe for human consumption, but a few aren't. So it is very important that you know your berries.
I leave most of them as food for the birds or some mammals like the pinemarten do like them as well.
My own selection I use are rosehip, hawthorn, elderberries, some sloes, blackberries. ..

Mushroom season is upon us and there is something magical about fungi of all kinds.
A walk through fields and forests this time of year can be very rewarding. When we were young our Dad brought us regularly mushroom picking. We mainly picked porcine and chanterelles but also some birch bolette and my mum would make mushroom stew with dumplings (made of stale bread rolls). Now a delicatess in restaurants, that time a staple foraged food for stretching the weekly budget. If you harvest carefully and leave some of it behind you can be sure you find them at a similar spot next year.
Memories, memories....and yes I do still collect young birch bolette for consumption, but mostly enjoy looking at them.

I had a very enjoyable and interesting day at the National Ploughing Championships,, Europe's largest agricultural show.
Together with my climate ambassador colleagues we engaged visitors of all ages to fill in a survey about climate change and relevant action to achieve relevant goals.
The An Taisce climate ambassadors will be in Unit 2 – The Agri – Pavilion – Blackwater – Block 2 Row 2 Stand 9 over the next few days and would welcome a visit. So do call in 😊

It seems that 2026 was a successful year for butterflies in and around our little farm. The mild weather might be one reason, but the generous patches of nettles (someone mentioned lately that they probably can be seen from space 😁) along with the abundance of devil's bit scabious with other wildflowers helps to attract various species of butterflies and insects in general.
I should call myself a butterfly farmer πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜ƒπŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹....must check with the department of agriculture...
Butterfly experts please correct my specifications.

Locals and visitors alike....the forest trail committee is looking for your support.
Our forest trail offers something for everyone...short walk, long walk, open bog area, dense spruce, but also oak and ash corridors, birdsong,....a relaxing space before or after work, for dog walks.or just a stroll for anyone....breath in, breath out ..
Thanks for allowing me also to speak up in the video. Well done to Jess Breslin for creating such a lovely video.
