We are all devastated at the passing of our dear colleague, friend and teacher, Andrew Carney. Andrew was a Jarlath’s man through and through. Andrew’s dedication to St. Jarlath’s College was evident from the moment he joined us as a student in 1994. It was the most natural progression for Andrew to join the teaching staff of the college as an English and History teacher in 2011. It was a homecoming of sorts; he had returned to the place where he truly belonged. Andrew could only be described as the most kind, generous and thoughtful soul you could meet. He was loved by colleagues and students alike. Those students who were privileged to have been taught by Andrew, knew his power as a mentor and leader both in and out of the classroom. His love of sport was known to all and in the college, his dedication to senior football was legendary. Andrew had a special way with words and an absolute love of the Arts. He was a gifted actor and writer and this was obvious for everyone to see when he premiered his play, “The Prodigal.” Andrew was always a strong advocate for positive mental health and did everything he could to support the cause.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to his parents Jim and Claire, his sister Jennifer, his beloved nephew Jamie, his extended family and wide circle of friends. His loss will be dearly felt by so many. Andrew loved poetry and we will try to find comfort in this poem as we mourn his untimely passing in the days to come:

You can shed tears that he is gone
Or you can smile because he has lived
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him
Or you can be full of the love that you shared

You can remember him and only that he is gone

Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on

Andy, we will try to smile through the tears. Rest easy, dear friend.

St.Jarlath’s College will remain closed for tomorrow, Monday the 31st, as we come to terms with this most tragic of losses.

🌟Heartiest congrats to the Leaving Cert Class of 2026 on your fantastic results. We are extremely proud of your achievements. It was lovely celebrating with you this morning when you came in to collect your results. A big well done to Brian Morgan and Stephen Martyn who both received over 600 points🙌

Incoming 1st Year – Books & Stationery Collection

A reminder to parents/guardians of our incoming 1st Year students that books and stationery will be available for collection next week.

Surname A–L: Monday, 24th August | 10am–2pm
Surname M–Z: Tuesday, 25th August | 10am–2pm

Students should be accompanied by a parent/guardian or older relative as there will be quite a large number of books and stationery to bring home.

We would encourage everyone to attend on their allocated day where possible. If you are unable to attend on your allocated day, you may attend on the other collection day instead.

Collection will take place in the Study Hall at St Jarlath’s College. Please enter through the main gates and front door, turn right in the front hallway and continue down to the Study Hall.

We look forward to welcoming our new 1st Years ahead of the new school year.
