Celebrating the Winter Solstice at Uisneach 2023
The Winter Solstice this year in Ireland is today Friday, 22nd December at 03:27. The sunrise will be at 08:43 (fingers crossed !) and sunset will be at 16:10 here, giving us 7 hours and 22 mins of daylight.
The Winter Solstice is probably our oldest and most important festival, dating back thousands of years. Many see this as a time of rebirth, involving rituals, gatherings and many other celebrations. Every year people gather at various sites around the Country to be ‘present’ at this special time.
Protecting life until it can be reborn by the sun is the basis for the custom that we are all familiar with now. Bringing evergreen plants such as Holly, Ivy and even Fir trees into the home. People believed that the spirit of the sun, life and growth went into these evergreen plants during the Winter months and would symbolically offer the spirits shelter until the Spring returns.
We here on the Hill of Uisneach, will be celebrating the welcoming of the longer days ahead and for many the New Year, today at 12:00.
