Gait Analysis in Vettings – What Is It Really?

Recently ive noticed a increase of posts on other platforms encountering vettings using ai as tools to access movement.

As pony prices stay stronger buyers are getting more investigative with their investment especially in higher priced ponies.

Some vets are now using an app called Sleip(Swedish) and trojan(irish) during vettings to analyse a horse’s movement.
I know for some people that sounds like a gimmick.

It’s not.
It doesn’t diagnose lameness.
It doesn’t “fail” horses.
It doesn’t replace a vet’s eye.
All it does is measure movement.

The vet films the horse trotting in a straight line. The app then measures very small differences in how each limb moves — differences that are often too subtle for the human eye to see.

And here’s the important part:
All horses are slightly asymmetrical.
Just like people are left- or right-handed, horses load one side more than the other. Muscle development, training, saddle fit, even rider balance can create small differences in movement.

That does not automatically mean pain.
It does not automatically mean unsoundness.
It’s simply information.
A good vet uses that information alongside: • Clinical examination
• Flexion tests
• Palpation
• History and performance
The app doesn’t make decisions — the vet does.
If anything, this kind of technology can help us: • Pick up small muscle imbalances early
• Adjust training
• Improve strength and symmetry
• Protect long-term soundness

It’s not about calling horses lame.
It’s about understanding them better.
As breeders and producers, we shouldn’t be afraid of information. The more transparent and educated we are, the stronger our industry becomes.

Education is key here, knowledge is power and if we can understand it we can not panic over misinformation or know better how to assess the outcomes 💪💪💪
