Thomastown Community Kindergarten The Thomastown Kindergarten is situated in a rural setting in close vicinity to Kilkenny City and is influenced by the Steiner Waldorf approach.

We offer a rich foundation for the 2 1/2 to 5 year old child. Our main emphasis lies in creating a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere in which the child is allowed to learn by example rather than direct instructions. Our activities reflect the concerns, interests and developmental stages of the child and our environment is designed to foster personal and social learning, giving a foundation for la

ter formal learning. Each day is marked with a different activity integrated into the seasons, days and weeks such as: Watercolour painting, bread baking, bees-wax modelling, art and craft, gardening, music, ring-time, puppet show, creative play and lots of outdoors play. The toys and materials used are natural, stimulating to touch and imagination. Our snack-times are prepared and shared together using organic ingredients wherever possible and inviting social conversation. In recognition of its vital role in early childhood education, we offer the children time to play and we hope to offer an education that prepares the child "for life from life". The children couldn't believe it when this stunning demoiselle landed in the Kindie garden today!
They ran to get our dragonfly swatch book and they identified it as a male 'Beautiful Demoiselle'.(I think they are right!)

Our European Solidarity Corps volunteers Anna Maria and Selma took on a project to make a bug house for the kindergarten to follow the children's huge interest in bugs.🕷️

This week we marked the end of our school year, not with "graduations" but with fun days filled with games, treats and laughter.
The children from the morning group did a special puppet show, created by them as they helped to write the story, they took time and care to make their very own characters for the show.
We say goodbye to many as they move schools on their next adventures, while some we will see over the coming weeks at our camps and others will take a break until we see each other again for our new school year. ❤️

Today Anna Maria and Selma our 2 ESC volunteers decided to make something from their home country of Germany "Kartoffelpuffer".
So tasty, basically potato cakes served with home made apple sauce yes potato and apple, but don't knock it until you try it. Yummy!!!!
And for dessert one of the children surprised us with delicious banana muffins 💚

Making magic potions is another interest that popped up this week. ✨
As a surprise I gathered up bits and pieces from my garden etc for something a little different for them to use to make potions.
And a great morning was had, stirring and mixing as they became good and bad witches🪄 casting spells on everyone.
Not only are they having fun but learning about volume, capacity, floating, sinking, what mixes well together, what doesn't. Lots of experiments and exploration.
(The glitter is eco friendly).

The kindergarten is gone bug crazy.🐌🐞
It's great to see so much interest in our little critters.
To follow this interest some of the children made little bug jars.
Reusing old jars to hold the bug in so they could look at them more closely.
The children decorated the jars and used hammers and nails to put air holes into the lids.
They picked what they thought the bugs would like as a comfy bed in the jars 💚and we're then very excited to bring the jars home.
