🚸 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗿?

Another 𝟴𝟯 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗜𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 have been selected to join the 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲, bringing the total number of participating schools to 𝟲𝟬𝟵 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲.
Schools from 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 are included in the latest round. Nine of the newly selected schools are located on higher-speed rural roads, where different measures may be needed to help alert drivers and reduce speeds around schools.

Depending on what each school community needs, improvements can include:
🚸 Safer pedestrian crossings
🚶 Upgraded or wider footpaths
🚗 Traffic-calming measures
🎨 Distinctive School Zone road markings
🚲 Improved cycling facilities
🛣️ Measures designed specifically for higher-speed rural roads

The newly selected schools will now work with their local authority and Safe Routes to School team to identify the measures most appropriate to their particular area.

And there are encouraging signs from schools where work has already been completed.

Surveys representing almost 𝟭,𝟳𝟬𝟬 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 at completed schemes found:

🚲 Cycling increased by almost 𝟰𝟵%
🚶 Walking increased by 𝟴%
🛴 Scooting increased by 𝟭𝟳.𝟱%
🚌 Public transport use increased by almost 𝟭𝟲%
🚗 Car use decreased by more than 𝟭𝟬%

These figures come from surveyed completed projects, so results will naturally vary from school to school. But they do show the difference that changes around the school gate can make.

For Parents’ Associations in particular, this is a really practical conversation.

👇 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱-𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹?
🚗 Speeding?
🚸 Nowhere safe to cross?
🚶 Poor or missing footpaths?
🚙 Congestion at drop-off and collection?
🚲 No safe cycling route?
🚌 Problems around buses and parking?

And if your school has already had Safe Routes improvements, 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲?

🚗🚲🛴🚌 Grennan College is delighted to announce that we have been chosen as one of the 83 schools which will now join the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Programme as part of Round 5 of schools announced by The National Transport Authority (NTA), together with the Department of Transport, An Taisce and local authorities! We look forward to working with the parties involved, to create safer and more attractive conditions for children and families walking, wheeling and cycling to school. Since its launch in 2021, the Safe Routes to School Programme has grown into one of Ireland’s most ambitious active travel initiatives, helping to create safer and more accessible school environments through measures such as School Zones, School Streets, improved pedestrian crossings, traffic calming and enhanced cycling facilities. See the NTA Website for more details 🎉

💙 How to Be a Good Friend from 1A 💙
Over the last week in school, 1A have been exploring what it means to be a good friend. 🤝 Through discussion and creativity, students designed posters either individually or as part of a group, highlighting the qualities that help build strong, positive friendships, such as kindness, respect, honesty, listening and including others.
This activity is helping our students develop important Junior Cycle Key Skills, including:
✨ Communicating; sharing ideas and listening to others’ perspectives.
✨ Working with Others; recognising the importance of teamwork, cooperation and inclusion.
✨ Staying Well; understanding how positive friendships support our wellbeing and sense of belonging.
A wonderful reminder that small acts of kindness can make a big difference! 🌟

A huge thank you to Marcella Hughes, Commis Chef Instructor & Tutor with Kilkenny and Carlow ETB, who facilitated two fantastic Culinary Skills workshops for students in 4A on Tuesday.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, proudly donning their chef hats as they developed new culinary skills in a fun & engaging environment. They learned how to make their own fresh pasta & created some delicious cheesecakes along the way!

We are incredibly grateful to be able to avail of programmes like these, which help students develop essential life skills, gain hands-on real-world experience & enhance their future employability.

Well done to Marcella & all of our students for their enthusiasm and excellent participation! 4B are eagerly awaiting their chance to engage in the workshops in November! 🍝👨‍🍳🧑‍🍳🍰
