SCHOOL SPORTS SPOTLIGHT - GOLF

Golf offers both our junior and senior students a unique opportunity to represent the school as part of a team in what is traditionally known as an individual sport. Each year we enter teams into the East Leinster and All - Ireland schools competitions.

Many of our students play regularly in the nearby local clubs while a number of past pupils have gone on the represent their respective college teams both at home here in Ireland and abroad in the USA. Max Kennedy (Class of 2020) attended the University of Louisville on a golf scholarship and is currently playing professionally on the European Challenge Tour.

Current 1st Year student Ben Mulvaney (Howth Golf Club) was selected to “Beat the Pro’s” at The Amgen Irish Open 2026 and won some amazing prizes for his excellent tee shot. Tim Lavin (5th Year) was also the overall nett champion at the U19 Flogas Irish Junior Open Spring Tour event at the Heritage Golf Resort.

SCHOOL SPORT SPOTLIGHT - RACKET SPORTS

St. Fintan’s HS enters teams across a number of different racket sports. We enter teams at u14, u16 and u19 level in Tennis, Squash and Badminton at Dublin, Leinster and All Ireland level.

We are fortunate to have a number of dedicated teachers involved in each of these sports and are very lucky to have access to the amazing facilities at Sutton Lawn Tennis Club. While being traditionally known as individual sports there is a strong emphasis placed on both teamwork and togetherness across all racket sports.

A number of past pupils including Sam Buckley (Squash) Conor Moran (Squash), Ryan Farrell (Table Tennis) and Eoin Quinn (Tennis) have all played on the international stage. There are also a sizeable number of current students playing at the highest level
in Ireland including Ciaran McKenna (Tennis), Ben Lynch (Badminton), Advik Ajay, Christian Dromgoole and Danny Jones (Squash).

SCHOOL SPORT SPOTLIGHT - BASKETBALL

Basketball is a sport which has enjoyed huge success in the last 30 years winning 20 All-Ireland A titles in both league and cup, ranging from 1st year to senior, since 1995.

St. Fintan’s basketball program has seen a rejuvenation in the last number of years with the 2024 senior team progressing to the All-Ireland league quarter-final for the first time since 2015 and the junior team reaching the last eight of the All-Ireland Cup at the beginning of 2026. This revival is a result of the huge effort and support of the teachers and coaches in the school.

The introduction of the annual St. Fintan’s All-Star Basketball Game in 2023 has been a huge success and perfect addition to the legacy of one of St. Fintans most successful sports.

Current 3rd Year students Ronan Lee and Senan O' Connor have also just been selected to represent the Irish u 16 national squad.

SCHOOL SPORT SPOTLIGHT - ATHLETICS
The sport of athletics has always been very important in St.Fintan’s. Backboned by the coaching provided by Paddy Noonan and Kay Bannon (Raheny Shamrocks), the school has always had a large number of students participating and succeeding in various Athletics events in both cross country and track & field.

Our coaches take a keen interest in developing each student and helping them reach their potential. Many of our new students who have never taken part in athletics, come to the school and under the guidance of Paddy and Kay, fall in love with the sport and achieve amazing results.

During the All Ireland Schools Championship in 2026 our Senior Athletics Team consisting of Des O’ Neill (Class of 2026), Oliver Macauley (Class of 2026), Erik Sammon (Class of 2026), Fionn DeWilde (Class of 2026) and Andy Harringotn (6th Year) set a new championship record to claim the College of Science Cup which is a highly prestigious award presented to the best overall school since 1925.

Des O’ Neill also won the 400m hurdles and went on to represent Ireland at the u20 World Championships this summer setting a new personal best in the same event.

SPONSORED WALK/RUN - THANK YOU

Huge thanks to everyone involved in ensuring the St. Fintan's Annual School Walk/Run was a success this year. It was great to see over 600 students travelling from the school to the Tree of Life and back today, with approximately 400 students choosing to run the route.

This is a very important event for the school as it is our only means of raising much needed funds for PE equipment and extra-curricular sports in the school.

Many thanks for your continued cooperation and support.

SCHOOL SPORT SPOTLIGHT - RUGBY

Since being introduced in 2001, Rugby has gone from strength to strength over the course of the past 25 years in St. Fintan's High School. With the support provided by Suttonians RFC, huge strides have been made during that time, with a highlight being the progression from the Senior Development Cup in 2007 to qualification for the Leinster Schools Senior Cup in 2017.

Subsequent qualifications in 2018, 2022, 2024 were achieved before the school reached the semi-final of the competition in 2025. Historic victories over Temple Carrig Greystones and Castleknock College ensured that we became the first public school to reach this stage of the competition since 1993 and the only Northside school to reach the semi-final since 2020.

Some outstanding students have been selected to represent both Leinster and Ireland at an underage level. Most notable are Jack Aungier and Sean Cribbin. Aungier, who is a professional player with Munster was capped by Ireland in July 2025. Cribbin became the school’s third Olympian when representing Ireland in Rugby Sevens at Paris 2024.

The school fields four teams including 1st and 2nd Year teams, 3rd Year (JCT) and SCT Teams (4th - 6th Years), with training and home matches taking place after school in Suttonians RFC.

SCHOOL SPORT SPOTLIGHT - ULTIMATE FRISBEE

Ultimate Frisbee is one of the newer sports in St. Fintan’s High School entering our first teams into the Dublin Schools League as recently as 2014. Since then the sport has grown from strength to strength in the school.

There are currently over 120 students, across all six years, who train/play Frisbee in the school on a weekly basis and the game has become one of the fastest growing and most popular sports in the school.

Despite only picking up the sport during their time in school a large number of pupils have kept up the sport while at college and regularly return for the annual end of year past vs. present game.

A number of past pupils have gone on to represent various Irish national teams at U20, U24 and Senior level at the European Championships and World Games. Rory Keogh (Class of 2017) is captain of the 2024 European Club Champions Ranelagh and is joined at the club by Ben Runswick (Class of 2020), Finn Alexander (Class of 2023) and Ian Goodwin (Class of 2024) who captained Ireland U20's at the recent World Championships with Euan Kinsella (Class of 2025) also on the team.

The school has seen a lot of recent success and currently holds the Dublin Junior Cup and All Ireland Junior titles having won the last five titles in a row. This success has also progressed to the seniors who have won the three of the last five Dublin Senior Cups and also three of the last five Senior All Ireland titles.

Gaelic Football is a hugely popular sport in St.Fintan's. Fielding 4 teams at the top level in both Dublin & Leinster schools competition, we strive to create an environment based around teamwork and leadership.

Several of our former students have gone on to play with Dublin at the highest levels, including Brian Fenton and Brian Howard, key figures in recent Dublin senior football teams.

Our goal is to give each student as many opportunities as possible to play Gaelic Games and develop their skills. We are very fortunate to have a large number of committed teachers who work with our students on each team.

3 DAYS TO GO TO OUR ANNUAL SCHOOL SPONSORED WALK.

SCHOOL SPORT SPOTLIGHT - HURLING
Hurling in St. Fintan’s continues to thrive with large numbers of students playing every year. Supported by the tremendous work going on in all of the local clubs in the area, we have been able to field 4 teams across the age grades and compete at the top level in Dublin and Leinster.

The school has enjoyed some huge success over the last number of years including 4 Dublin A Senior titles in the last 5 years and being named Dublin Hurling School of the Year on two occasions while also competing in Leinster A at Junior and Senior levels.

Some outstanding students have been selected to represent Dublin at inter county level over the last few years. They include Paddy Doyle and Sean Gallagher who are both current members of the Dublin Senior hurling panel.

There is a strong culture of hurling in the school driven by the teachers and students involved. Our motto is “Iomáint gach lá” and this can seem everyday on our field with large numbers of students playing hurling at lunch time and after school.

Sport Spotlight - SOCCER

There is a huge passion for the sport of Soccer in St. Fintan’s High School. Lunch time each day sees large numbers of students engaging in the game on the school field.

We field teams at all levels at top level in the Dublin & Leinster schoolboy leagues and our students have access to lots of opportunities to play the game, train together and develop as players. We have a tradition of competing well in all competitions and have achieved a high level of success in recent years reaching a number of Dublin finals.

Some of our well known former students who are excelling in soccer include Dan Ring (Shelbourne FC), Jamie Mullins (Wycombe Wanderers, UK), Jack Moylan (Cardiff City, UK) and William Hondermarck (Bromley FC, UK).
