WHY STUDY WITH US? The master's programme will give you knowledge and skills in critical thinking and analysis, as well as an applied understanding of broad areas of gender theory, intersectional feminisms, and global gender policy and debates relevant to our increasingly globalised societies.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? The MA includes modules that cover feminist theories, histories and activisms, q***r theory and sexualities, masculinities, gendered violence and bodily politics, migration studies, critical health studies, LGBTQ+ studies, and post-colonial feminist analysis through a lens that engages with critical debates on inequalities and intersections of gender, race, social class, ethnicity, dis/ability and broader ideas of gender identities and representations.

You will deepen your understanding of contemporary debates and concepts related to gender in a globalised world, and be equipped with the knowledge, language, and skills to identify, challenge, and debate rigid concepts of gender and systems of power that control cultural and material resources and restrict rights and representation.

WHO ARE WE? You will engage uniquely with faculty from a range of interdisciplinary backgrounds and expertise, including anthropology, history, literary studies, law, politics, and sociology, with significant global practitioner experience in the programme's areas of study.

For today's Wonderful Women Wednesday, we celebrate Dr Aideen Quilty, a trusted 'critical friend' of Women's Collective Ireland. She works at UCD Gender Studies where she is Associate Professor in Gender Studies and Social Justice. The Master's in Gender Studies at UCD is currently open for applicants to its 2025-2026 programme. The Master's offers an interdisciplinary approach encompassing feminism and feminist theories, masculinities, q***r and sexuality studies, social justice and activism. It has developed over thirty years to become the most established gender studies programme in Ireland, with a strong international reputation for research and scholarship.
Students engage with feminist, q***r, intersectional, post-colonial, decolonial theories and perspectives, supported by full-time staff with expertise in Sociology, Law, History, Political Science, Anthropology, Race and Racism, Decoloniality, etc. Our interdisciplinary global faculty come from a range of academic and international policy and practice backgrounds to create a vibrant classroom experience.
The UCD MA in Gender Studies will appeal to students interested in challenging traditional ways of thinking and knowing. It will equip those who seek to transform gendered relations and achieve social and economic justice across local and global levels, based on gender equality and social solidarity.
Our programme welcomes students from diverse backgrounds, including recent graduates, professionals, activists, and local, national, or international students. UCD Gender Studies operates within the UCD School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice. The School co-hosts the Centre for Gender, Feminisms & Sexualities (CGFS).
