Introduction to Beekeeping - 2026

We are running the course at Teach Laighne in Humbert Street, Tubbercurry, County Sligo. It will be held in the Library Community Room.

Starting at 7.00pm on Tuesday, the 10th of March, there will be eight sessions, covering all aspects of practical beekeeping, and a bit about honey production and other bee-related products.

And all for the princely sum of €40. I can manage about sixteen (16) people in the group...

We at the SLBA have arranged for Steve Riley, to come and talk to our group. Steve wrote the book, THE HONEY BEE SOLUTION TO VARROA (A Practical Guide for Beekeepers). It’s all about going treatment-free…

Steve is the current Chair and Education Officer at Westerham Beekeepers, in Kent, England.

The talk will be held on Saturday, the 6th of September in a room called The Nest in Sligo. Starting early evening, 6.30pm / 7.00pm and I imagine it’ll be about two (2) hours with questions etc. and tea and biscuits. Maybe a bit more.

It only has space for about 50 people. There will be a chance to make a small donation at the door to defray expenses.

Along with my honey I will also have thanks to Christopher Feehily from Sligo and Leitrim beekeepers association an observation hive so you can see first hand the queen if you can spot her, worker bees and maybe the odd drone or two😁

It’s a fabulous study of using, and promoting, the natural resistance (to Varroa) in colonies. In analysing and selecting those that show this trait, we can reduce the dependence on miticides to manage the pest!

INTRODUCTION TO BEEKEEPING - 2025

Are you interested in learning more about beekeeping? Would you like to become a beekeeper? Or just want to learn a little about nature’s great pollinators? Here's a way to satisfy your curiosity and/or start a fascinating and eco-friendly hobby.

Starting on Tuesday, 18th of March, 2025, the course will run for 8 weeks, (Tuesday evening each week). Venue, the Community Room at Tubbercurry Library. The cost is €40.
