Procedures shouldn't replace using number sense. Seeing the opportunity to try out different approaches is a big part of 'doing maths' Students being restricted to a procedure they follow, especially ones they don't understand, may have some short term wins but will likely present long term challenges.

💫💡Saturday was full of maths chats about topics around factors, prime numbers, composite numbers, importance of strategy in maths, place value when thinking of two digitt addition and much more.

Our youngest learners in 3rd class had great ideas around this activity in the pic ⬇️⬇️⬇️ A task like this moves students beyond rotely applying procedures to mindfully considering the importance of place value when carrying out addition in order to create larger and smaller sums. This is an example of a consolidation exercise, giving students opportunity to strengthen their knowledge on key ideas. 🔑

💫💫 We are excited about kicking off tomorrow.

Look out for the Sligo Mathematics sign at the ATU Sligo when looking for the classroom tomorrow, all parents have been emailed the location of the classroom with coordinates to get there!

I know that some people who showed interest haven't been given a group yet...I will be looking at putting together more groups and times over the next few weeks.

Lessons have moved to Saturday afternoons. I will be contacting everyone who expressed an interest with the new times tomorrow.

Classes will start this Saturday and run for each group sometime between 1pm and 5pm.

Each lesson will be 1 hour in duration.
