💚🤍🧡 Adam Foley selected for Ireland 💚🤍🧡

We are incredibly proud to announce that SGS student Adam Foley has been selected to represent Ireland at the ‘Coupe de la Jeunesse’ Beach Rowing Sprints, taking place in Portugal at the end of September.

Adam started rowing in school in first year and quickly moved up the ranks. He won numerous medals at indoor rowing competitions, becoming the schools most successful rower to date. Adam was invited to join Sligo Rowing Club and continued his success at local and national regattas. It is an incredible achievement for Adam to have earned this green jersey and a hugely proud moment for his family and everyone here in Sligo Grammar School.

Adam will be travelling to Portugal with a team of 8 junior rowers from all over Ireland. The ‘Coupe de la Jeunesse’ Beach Sprints is an Olympic standard rowing event of the International Rowing Federation for European athletes in the under-19 category.

This achievement speaks to the consistency, discipline and dedication Adam has shown over the past 5 years. We wish him the very best of luck in this competition.

🎉🎉 Congratulations to our Leaving Certificate Class 2025/6🎉🎉

There was great excitement in Sligo Grammar School this morning as the Class of 2026 returned to receive their leaving cert results. Renowned for its strong academic record, SGS once again celebrated excellent individual and collective subject performances across the board.

4% of our cohort of students obtained the maximum 625 points and 81% achieved success in 5 higher level subjects or more. Today marks the celebration of years of dedication, perseverance and hard work by our students and the unwavering support and guidance they have received from their families, teachers and staff at SGS.

This is an incredible milestone for each and every one of our students. Sligo Grammar School wishes you every success and happiness as you move onto your next chapter.

🏉 Farewell to our Senior Rugby Girls and TY International players 🏉

I’d like to say a big thank you and farewell to the departing members of our Senior Girls rugby team. Firstly, to our 6th years, Lauren Hunter and Mirabelle Gibbons, who have led by example on the training pitch and in matches, giving every game their best. Lauren was part of the driving force for getting Girls Rugby off the ground here in the school, and has represented the school brilliantly as captain, as well as her time at provincial level. Huge thank you to both girls and best of luck to them as they receive their state exam results on Friday.

We also have said goodbye to some of our TY exchange students, who got stuck in on the rugby pitch despite having never played before. Their enthusiasm and development has been amazing and we hope they have brought amazing memories and a love for the game back home with them. So, I’d like to say a massive thanks and goodbye to Misha Chun, Matilda Pavron-Riordan, Louise Binet and Lilith Botha.

Finally, a big thank you to the coaching ticket - Sophie Kinghan for her work and support on and off the pitch, and especially thanks to Stanley Hunter who has been a constant presence on the training pitch and an amazing support for Girls Rugby in the school over the past few years.

🏑Farewell to our senior hockey players 2025/26 🏑

With the final few weeks remaining before we begin a new academic year, we at SGS would like to take this opportunity to say goodbye to three outstanding 6th year players - Éabha Daffy, Aoife Cradock and Abigail Higgins - who have made an enormous contribution to hockey in our school.

Éabha Daffy, our captain this season, has shown outstanding commitment to hockey from her very first day in the school. Her dedication and hard work saw her represent Connacht for two seasons each at both U16 and U18 level, culminating in the honour of captaining the Connacht U18 side in this season’s Interprovincial Series, where they won 2 of their 4 matches. She also had the opportunity to train with the Irish U16 squad when in her final year at that age group and is currently training with the Ireland U20 indoor hockey team. Her dedication to the sport and constant drive for improvement have been an inspiration to all the SGS hockey players coming up behind her.

Our vice-captain and chief energy bringer, Aoife Cradock, has been at the heart of the squad all season. Whether at training sessions, matches or team meetings, she consistently brought positivity, enthusiasm and leadership, while also delivering on the pitch when it mattered most. Her two brilliantly taken goals in our semi-final victory were a highlight of the season. She also had the distinction of training with the Connacht U16 squad during the summer of her 3rd year and was a driving force in our run to the cup final.

Having joined the school in 5th year, our third departing player, Abigail Higgins, quickly became an important member of the senior squad. Her pace and direct style of play added a real attacking threat over the last two seasons, while her excellent attitude made her a fantastic teammate. It was especially memorable to see both her and her 1st year sister, Annalise, represent the school together in the Senior Cup Final squad, doing so with great distinction.

All three girls will be hugely missed by everyone in the school hockey community. We thank them for their commitment, leadership and contribution to hockey in the school, and we wish them every success in their pending state exam results and in the future.

It is with immense sadness that we are writing with the news of the passing of our esteemed, retired colleague Tony O’Gara. Tony taught at Sligo Grammar School, a time which he often referred to as one of the highlights of his life. Tony spent 35 years in various roles within SGS - guidance counselor, house parent on the boys side, CSPE teacher and coordinator for the first years’ adventure weekend.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Tony’s family at this time.

🏉Farewell to our outgoing members of SCT 2025/6 🏉

As the dust begins to settle post state exams, Sligo Grammar School would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere thanks to all our 6th years for representing Sligo Grammar so proudly throughout the season and we wish you every success in the future. “We have managed to make two senior teams this year. You have been inspirational to the school, each other and your parents for setting the standard and representing the school. The time, effort and devotion to each other and our course I will not forget. I and the backroom team would like to thank you all for everything you’ve done for SGS senior rugby.

🎥🎞️ 🇺🇸Sligo Grammar School member of teaching staff’s tv production is airing tomorrow night 🎥🎞️ 🇺🇸

On the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence folllowing the American Revolution, our very own Mr. David Cummins has been involved in the televised production of ‘Réabhlóid Mheiriceá- Laochra Gael’ which airs on TG4 tomorrow night at 9:30pm and again on July 8th. It follows closely the involvement of so many ordinary Irish men and women who played a big role in the revolutionary war, many of whom put their life on the line in the struggle for independence.

Well done to all involved and in particular to Mr. Cummins.
