Today, our 2nd, 4th and 6th Classes attended mass in St. Anne’s Church to celebrate a very special member of our school community, Sr. Annette Duignan, as she prepares to leave Sligo and begin a new chapter in Roscommon.
Following mass, our principal, Olivia Flannery, paid a warm tribute to Sr. Annette, reflecting on her remarkable contribution to education and her long and special association with Our Lady of Mercy Primary School.
Sr. Annette’s connection with our school stretches back more than six decades. She first came to Scoil Fatima as a teacher in 1961, later becoming Principal of Scoil Chaitríona. When Scoil Fatima, Scoil Chaitríona and Scoil Phádraig amalgamated in 1993 to form Our Lady of Mercy Primary School, Sr. Annette became the first Principal of our new school, serving until 1998.
Her contribution to education did not end with her retirement. Sr. Annette continued to support schools through her work as a Diocesan Advisor and has always maintained a very special connection with our school. Her kindness and generosity have continued right up to the present day, with Sr. Annette donating her keyboard to our school before her departure.
Over the years, Sr. Annette has taught and supported generations of Sligo children and their families, including members of our own staff. Her contribution to education and to our school community is an extraordinary one.
As Sr. Annette prepares to leave Sligo, we thank her for her many years of service, leadership, kindness and friendship. She will always hold a very special place in the history and heart of Our Lady of Mercy Primary School.
We wish Sr. Annette every happiness, good health and peace in her new home in Roscommon.
