At the heart of his theory is the idea that children learn best through relationships, social interaction, and play. He introduced the concept of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) – the space between what a child can do on their own and what they can achieve with the support of a safe, attuned adult.

In play, children naturally step into this zone.

They explore roles, express feelings, test boundaries, and make sense of their world.
For play therapists, this is where the magic happens. ✨

Through a trusting therapeutic relationship, we offer scaffolding; gently supporting the child’s emotional and developmental growth at their own pace.

Within the safety of the playroom, children are not just “playing”…

They are:
• Processing experiences
• Developing regulation
• Building confidence
• Strengthening relationships

Vygotsky reminds us that healing and growth happen in connection.

This week’s podcast episode is about helping young people to regulate their emotions. Children can often display a rollercoaster of emotions and we discuss how normal this is, the developmental stages of emotional regulation and the important role of co-regulation – where parents help their child manage their emotions. Play looks different for every child and that’s exactly how learning grows. 🌱

From solitary exploration to cooperative play, children move through stages that support social-emotional development, communication, creativity, and problem-solving. Play isn’t random; it’s a powerful pathway to connection, confidence, and understanding the world around them.

When we slow down and observe, we can see children practising sharing, negotiating, imagining, and building relationships; all through play-based learning. ✨

Let’s celebrate the many ways children play and remember that every stage is meaningful, valuable, and part of their unique learning journey.
