Knowing how to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is one of the most critical life-saving skills a person can possess. When someone experiences sudden cardiac arrest, their heart stops pumping blood to the brain and other vital organs.
The primary reasons why knowing CPR is so essential include:
• Saves Lives: Immediate bystander CPR can double or triple a person's chance of survival during cardiac arrest. Without intervention, a victim's chance of survival drops by roughly 10% with every passing minute.
• Prevents Brain Damage: The brain can suffer permanent damage in as little as 3 to 4 minutes without oxygenated blood flow. CPR acts as a manual pump, circulating blood to buy time and preserve brain function until medical professionals arrive.
• Most Cardiac Arrests Happen at Home: Statistically, a significant majority of cardiac arrests happen in private residential settings. Learning CPR means you are most likely equipping yourself to save a family member, friend, or loved one.
• Builds the Confidence to Act: Emergencies are highly stressful. Formal CPR training provides the knowledge and muscle memory needed to stay calm, step up, and take charge of a crisis effectively rather than freezing.
• Bridges the Gap for First Responders: Even with fast emergency response services, it takes time for an ambulance to arrive. Bystander CPR keeps the patient viable during those critical intervening minutes.
Anyone Can Do It, You do not need to be a medical professional to make a difference. If you are untrained or uncomfortable giving rescue breaths, Hands-Only CPR (continuous chest compressions to the beat of the song "Stayin' Alive") is highly effective and widely recommended by health organizations.

🚨 IMPORTANT FIRST AID UPDATE FOR EARLY YEARS SERVICES 🚨

Tusla’s Early Years Inspectorate has issued a new Regulatory Notice on first-aid requirements in pre-school services, effective from September 2026.

A key change is the inclusion of:
✅ PHECC First Aid Essentials Paediatric First Aid. This new one-day course is now included among the PHECC qualifications considered by Tusla to meet the relevant first-aid training requirements for Early Years services.

What qualifications are recognised
The Regulatory Notice includes:
• First Aid Responder (FAR)
• First Aid Essentials – Paediatric First Aid

What does this mean for Early Years services?
Under Regulation 25(1), an appropriately trained person must be immediately available to children at all times while the service is operating.

Services should also ensure:
✅ Trained staff are available during operation and on outings
✅ First-aid provision reflects the service’s risk assessment, size, hazards, children’s needs and staffing
✅ Training records and certificates are current and available
✅ PHECC training is delivered through an appropriate PHECC Recognised/Approved Training Institution, we at Everest Safety Elite are please to use -TAC | Coffey Training, Assessment & Certification

⚠️ Important: This does not remove an employer’s separate responsibilities under Health & Safety legislation for workplace first-aid provision.

FAR is no longer the only PHECC first-aid qualification recognised for Early Years regulatory purposes.
The new PHECC First Aid Essentials Paediatric First Aid course is now expressly included, giving Early Years providers a new one-day paediatric-focused option.
