St. Joseph's Secondary School Golden Jubilee Celebrations

From little acorns great oaks grow! All the more special because the 13 girls were divided between four year groups!

When thirteen students (all girls) began their secondary education in the convent across the road from the present school in 1961, little did they think that 50 years later we would be celebrating our Golden Jubilee as a school of 500 plus, meeting the needs of the entire community in Rush. As a school that moves with the times, and recognising the need to provide an education for the boys of Rush, St Joseph’s became a co-educational school in 1981. It is a privilege to be principal of the school during the Golden Jubilee following the footsteps of Tom Loughnane, Sr Caitriona O’Hara(1983), Sr Kathleen O’Keefe(1975), Ms Teresita Durkan (1972), And Sr Patricia Finucane(1961). They have all left their mark on the character of the school leading committed and dedicated staff. A feature of St Joseph’s has been the close contact between past pupils of the school and the local community. My thanks in advance to those members of the Golden Jubilee Committee for their work in celebrating the life of the school and showcasing the school today.

2011 is a very special year for the St Joseph’s Community and our celebrations begin with the visit of President Mary McAleese on 28 January 2011. We are honoured that the President has found time in her busy schedule to launch our celebrations. In September we will hold a special Mercy Day Mass to mark the beginning of the academic year. Past pupils will be welcome to attend this very important day in tWe have planned many other events including:
· An Open Evening when past pupils can meet up with old friends, teachers and Sisters of Mercy
· A book celebrating ’50 Years of Golden Memories’
· Quiz
· Golf Classic
· Trad Session and Ceile
· Pamper Night
· Sculpture
· Christmas Carols

As you can see from the above, we want to provide past pupils with as many opportunities to visit the school and reminisce with old friends and colleagues. The Parents Association (many of whom are past pupils) is keen to set up an exhibition of memorabilia. Please drop anything of interest into the office with your name and contact details so that the items can be returned to you after the exhibition. Please leave your name, the year you started at St Joseph’s and your email address so that we can keep you posted about up coming events. Use our page to keep up to date with other past pupils.

Huge congratulations to last year’s 3rd Year group who received their Junior Cycle results last Wednesday! There was great excitement on the day and we’re very proud of each and every one of you! Yesterday afternoon we gathered as a whole school community in St Maurs Church for our annual Mercy Day Mass to mark the opening of a new academic year! It was a lovely celebration honoring the vision of our founder, Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy, providing us all with an opportunity to reflect on carrying forward her spirit of kindness, community and service. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making yesterday so meaningful - our Chaplaincy and Ember team, our Religion and Music Departments, our choir, our readers and our flag bearers, and of course to all our fantastic students, staff and guests for being there! Many thanks to Father Paul and to Sister Basil for celebrating with us and for their blessings for the year ahead. September 2026 marks 65 years since Catherine McAuley’s vision first began serving the community of Rush - what started as a school of 13 girls and two nuns in 1961 is now a story that has grown to 964 students and more than 100 staff in 2026! Well done again to everyone for the lovely atmosphere that was present on the day!

We were delighted to have been contacted by the Education Correspondent of The Irish Times who heard about the different initiatives we run in the school to promote Reading for Pleasure. The article, which was published in last weekend’s edition of The Irish Times, explored changing patterns and attitudes towards reading amongst young people and looked at what a number of schools are doing to award students time and space to read for enjoyment! We’re so proud of our eight 3rd Year students who featured in the piece as representatives of the school! Over their first two years in St Joseph’s, these students have engaged with our visit to Rush Library, our timetabled Bookworm classes, our ‘Let’s Read’ and ‘Let’s Read at Home’ month long initiatives and challenges and some of these 3rd Years benefited from our TY Paired Reading programme with local Primary Schools when they were in 5th Class! They’ve experienced success in finishing books that they’ve chosen to read as a result of their participation in these initiatives which are run by our Literacy Team in the school! All of our 1st, 2nd and 4th Year students have a dedicated weekly Bookworm class on their timetables to facilitate reading for pleasure and we’ll be running our ‘Let’s Read’ interventions again in January 2027 📚📖📚 Our parent and guardian Bookclub regrouped last Wednesday - check TYRO if you would like to join!

During the summer, four of our senior students were awarded scholarships to attend the Gaeltacht for two weeks and three to attend different Euro Languages College residential camps for 2-3 weeks to be immersed in French, German or Spanish 🇮🇪🇫🇷🇩🇪🇪🇸 All students reported that the courses benefited their language skills, which will be an invaluable support as they prepare for their Leaving Certificate Exams. We’ll be awarding more scholarships to our current 5th Years for summer 2027 to allow them to become immersed in the language they study!
