Why you should stop judging your workouts by calories burned 🔥⌚️ esp if you’re doing strength training.

What fitness trackers don’t tell you 👇

➡️ Strength training is massively undervalued by trackers. Many watches only count what happens during the workout, however strength training creates something called the EPOC effect (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption).

In simple terms 👉 your body keeps burning more energy for hours (sometimes up to 24–48 hours) after the session while it:
✅ Repairs muscle
✅ Replenishes energy stores
✅ Adapts and gets stronger

Your tracker doesn’t count this after effect.

➡️ “Lower calorie burn ” sessions can actually do more for your body. While a steady cardio workout might show a big calorie number, once it’s finished, the burn largely stops.

A well-designed strength session may:
• Look lower impact
• Show fewer calories on your watch
• Feel less “sweaty” 💦

However, it often leads to greater total energy use over time because of EPOC + muscle building.

So the workout that appears worse on your tracker can actually be the more effective one.

➡️ Calories ≠ quality
Chasing the highest burn often means:
• Avoiding weights
• Skipping rest
• Overdoing cardio
• Undervaluing recovery

Long term this can stall progress, not improve it.

Your tracker shows immediate output. Strength training creates long-term results.
Don’t let a watch ⌚️ convince you otherwise 💪💛

❌ Top 3 Common Mistakes Stalling Your Body Composition Progress

You’re training, “eating well”, yet nothing’s changing? One (or more) of these might be the reason 👇

1️⃣ Portion size delusion

You’ve worked out how many calories you should be eating. Maybe you’re even tracking… but you’re consistently underestimating how much you’re actually consuming.

If fat loss is the goal, wouldn’t it make more sense to slightly overestimate than underestimate?

The reality is, most people aren’t being fully honest about portion sizes. Labels aren’t read properly, and the “little extras” oils, spreads, sauces, dressings, handfuls of this and that, quietly add up across the day and week.

Your body tracks everything with precision… even when you don’t. That gap between perceived intake and actual intake is where frustration lives.

2️⃣ Going through the motions

Showing up is a great first step, but showing up alone doesn’t change your body.

Your body only adapts when it’s challenged, not when it’s comfortable.

If you’ve been using the same weights since 2024… we need to talk 😅

Your body is smart. If the weight, reps, effort, or intensity never increase, neither will your results.

Progressive overload = progress.
Comfort = maintenance.

3️⃣ Not moving enough outside of workouts

This a big one and a very common one. Your workout is only a small part of your day.

NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) which is all the movement you do outside structured training, is one of the biggest calorie burners after your basic metabolic needs.

This includes:
• Steps
• Cleaning
• Walking the dog
• Playing with the kids
• Taking the stairs instead of lifts
• Standing instead of sitting

You can smash a workout… then undo a big chunk of that impact by being sedentary the other 23 hours of the day.

✨ The solution isn’t more restriction - it’s more self-awareness.

Honest portions.
Proper training effort.
Eat well.
Move well.

When you lose all of your excuses, you find all of your results 💜

3 NON-NEGOTIABLES for Women in our 30s, 40s & 50s ⬇️

(If you care about strength, energy & feeling good in your body, read on….)

1️⃣ Hit your protein target. Daily.
Protein becomes foundational, not optional.
A smart target is 1.2–1.6g of protein per kg of body weight per day…..and higher again to 2g per kg of bodyweight if you’re strength training. This supports maintaining & building lean muscle mass (which otherwise will be declining naturally at this age), bone density, blood sugar, recovery and appetite control. Miss this, and everything feels harder. Why do we need more? Because not only is muscle mass declining, as we age it also becomes harder for our bodies to absorb & utilise the protein we consume. Fun 🫥

2️⃣ Strength train with intent 💪
Lifting weights is one of the most powerful tools we have at this stage of our lives.
In our 40s and 50s, progressive overload (gradually increasing weights or reps) is key for preserving muscle, protecting bones, boosting confidence and staying capable for life, not just workouts.

3️⃣ Actively lower stress (this is HUGE) 🧘‍♀️
Chronic stress raises cortisol, which can stall fat loss, disrupt sleep and worsen perimenopausal symptoms.
Breathwork, yoga, walking, mobility work, stretching, time outdoors, good sleep routines, these are not optional “extras”. They’re essential for nervous system regulation and hormone balance at this time.

✨ Important note for women in their 40s & 50s:
If you’re training well and eating properly but still struggling with energy, weight or cravings, hormone support matters. Getting the right guidance can change everything. Speak to your GP (or a trusted holistic practitioner) if you feel like you are fighting a losing battle despite doing everything you should be.

Strong body. Calm nervous system. Supported hormones.
That’s the goal 🤍

Not everyone is able, or ready, for hard, sweaty, high-impact workouts…but that doesn’t mean you can’t still make meaningful change 💛

So many people come to me thinking they have to do intense exercise to improve their health.
You don’t.

The Blueprint 12-Week Program is about supporting your nutrition, wellbeing, and consistency, not pushing your body beyond what it can safely do.

If you’re:
• Returning after injury
• Managing back, joint, or mobility issues
• Feeling nervous about exercise
• Or simply not in a place for strenuous workouts

The Blueprint 12 Week Program can still support you.

The online classes are low-impact, slow and controlled, and always adaptable but just as importantly, the program works beautifully alongside:
🚶‍♀️ daily walking
🧘‍♀️ gentle movement
💨 mobility or physio exercises

Change doesn’t come from going “all in” - it comes from doing what you can, consistently.

Looking after your body and mind doesn’t have to be extreme. It just has to be sustainable ✨

➡️ The next group intake starts this Monday 12th Jan 2026 📅 for those who like to start with a group and have a set start date - but if you are not ready to start yet I also have a “start anytime” option which you’ll see on the website 💙

Here’s a post I created for my Blueprint 12 Week Program clients this week - I thought I’d share it here too 💙

WHY the bathroom scales is definitely not your friend right now - and what is….

If the first thing you’re tempted to do after Christmas is step on the scales, I want to gently suggest… don’t ❤️

Right now, the number you’d see won’t be measuring a true total bodyfat gain from any over indulgences over Christmas - it will mostly be reflecting:

➡️Extra carbs → stored water
➡️Saltier foods → water retention
➡️Disrupted routines, sleep and stress
➡️A body that’s simply doing its job after a different few weeks

What does matter right now is this:
👉 Returning to your normal routine
👉 Eating regularly and adequately
👉 Moving your body in ways that feel good
👉 Sleeping, hydrating, and lowering stress

When you do that, your body naturally settles. Water weight drops. Digestion normalises. Energy improves. No forcing. No punishment. No extremes.

More importantly, this programme isn’t about chasing numbers. It’s about:

➡️Consistency over perfection
➡️Behaviours over outcomes
➡️Trusting the process, even when it feels uncomfortable sometimes 💜

The real “win” this week isn’t a number. It’s showing up, getting back into rhythm, and letting your body catch up. Focus on the process. The rest will follow. 💪✨

🚫 The 3 worst things you can do for your long term fitness, nutrition & wellbeing goals this January!

1️⃣ Banning All Enjoyable Foods:
Telling yourself you are completely cutting out sweets, crisps, takeaways, or even that glass of wine entirely can backfire. It’s all easy to do in the beginning- but how long do we think that will last? Enjoying treats in moderation is key to a balanced lifestyle!

2️⃣ Going Too Hard, Too Quickly:
Jumping into intense workouts can lead to burnout or injury. Of course it’s tempting to go hell for leather at the workouts in January - especially if you feel you’ve over indulged at Xmas. It’s a recipe for failure however & a more long term sustainable approach is to start slow and build up gradually. Listen to your body, rest & recover when needed.

3️⃣ All-or-Nothing Mindset:
Perfection isn’t the goal. None of us are perfect at all times. We mess up - we miss workouts, it happens! Embrace imperfect action when working towards your goals & don’t give up if you have any slip ups! Consistency over perfection is what truly leads to long-term success 🙌

Make this January about balanced and sustainable habits! 💪✨
