📸 Its not easy holding dental dams in the wind desperately hoping it doesn't fly into your neighbours garden but I did it for the cause - safer s*x 😂

Finally I got round to trying the Sheer Gylde Dams I purchased from *xsiopa!

❔What is a dental dam?

A dental dam is a barrier method used to reduce the risk of catching or spreading an STI

❔How does it work?

Place some water based l**e on your v***a (this helps it stay in place) and set it over the area v***a/anus

📢 Stats - Gylde Dental Dams

➡️ Natural vegan friendly latex 10" 6"
➡️ Can be used for oral s*x or ri***ng
➡️ Single use

👿Our experience

✔️ As I've had an outbreak recently it gave me peace of mind that I would be reducing the risk of transmitting herpes to my partner whilst having oral s*x
✔️ Colourful and flavoured - we chose cola and although it only had a hint of cola taste it definitely wasn't unpleasant
✔️ Fun! I enjoyed stretching it up over my partner's face 😂 (Don't stretch too much as you may rip it)
✔️ We found it worked well for softer, slower play

⬇️ Created a rustling sound almost like a bin bag but I was concentrating on what it felt like and was property hypersensitive to sounds too

⬇️ Did move a little during oral s*x with some adjustments to ensure it was in place. The l**e did help reduce the movement. My partner after thought we should develop knickers that you could slot dams into and take it to dragons den 😂

⬇️ Tricky to include fi*****ng during play

⬇️ Cost- currently I purchased a pack of 4 for €12 althought these are premium quality with lots of great advice and tips from the very knowledgeable Shawna

👛If cost is an issue DIY dental dams can be made from condoms which are often free in s*xual health centres and even nitrile disposable gloves. Check out for how to create your own

☺️ Overall we enjoyed the experience and it definitely didnt feel as clinical as I thought it would.

🛠️Whats not to like about having yet another resource in your safer s*x toolkit!

✏️STI Story Share ✏️

I was diagnosed a couple weeks after my 20th birthday. I had recently started seeing someone so when I got an agonising pain around my private area, I first thought it was from having a lot of recent s*x.
However, when the pain wasn’t easing my friends encouraged me to go to the doctors.

I described my symptoms and the nurse told me it’s sounded like herpes. I wasn’t upset or scared when she said that, I was just kind of in denial. But when I was looked at by a second nurse (a s*xual health nurse) she informed me that I had lots of ulcers and that it couldn’t be anything else.

I immediately burst into tears. When the nurse looked up at me she said in a very confused tone which I will never forget, ‘why are you crying?’ To which I replied ‘because this will never go away!’ She replied, ‘yes virally it doesn’t go away but the infection will go and the virus will become dormant.’

She then explained to me how I was the third or fourth person she diagnosed that day with herpes. Basically she was telling me what I have is completely harmless and very common!

It has been three years and I still get scarred to open up to boys so I haven’t really dated anyone. I know that herpes is not a big deal and I haven’t had an outbreak since I was diagnosed, but I am just still too heartbroken and vulnerable about opening up to people I like.

I will never know who I got this from, the guy I was seeing at the time was an arse so we didn’t date for much longer. I should’ve told him about my diagnosis but I was just too scarred to even address it, I now realise this was very wrong of me because whether he gave it to me or not, he had a right to know.

I hope one day to meet someone I like and open up about my status and they will accept me for me.

✏️STI Story Share✏️

I don’t know the person I contracted it from and feel no ill towards them. I directed the anger to myself and spent weeks researching without sleep and terrorising myself.

A few months later I booked a one way ticket abroad trying to run away from the pain. I thought I could never be loved and that was not helped by being in a different place.

Once I stopped hating myself that is when the outbreaks began to subside down to what they are today in which I haven't had an outbreak in a year.

I told a lot of my friends who I could trust and this was a great decision as in the years that followed two of my good friends came to me for help dealing with the exact same thing. I felt so honoured to be able to help people through something that I went through devastatingly alone.

I met a boy and fell in love and lied to him. Luckily when it finally all came out he said “isn’t that what everyone has” and supported me throughly. He eventually contracted HSV2 also after 6 months. We are now 2 years in and it rarely bothers us. It goes to show you can be loved and it is not a death sentence to your love life.

If I could go back I wouldn’t of lied to him as I understand the consequences of this now and that he could not consent. I hated myseld soo much to think anyone else could accept me. I attended counselling with a s*xual health counsellor and at the time I didn’t think it worked at all. But it definitely did help over time.

Also finding this incredible online community of people being absolute advocates I think may have cured me from the stigma I had against myself and my low opinion of myself.

Thanks for reading!

✏️ STI Story Share ✏️

Hi everyone, my name is ciara, I am 22 and I have ge***al herpes, specially herpes simplex virus type 1. As many people know this virus is more commonly associated with oral herpes (cold sores).

I contracted and was diagnosed when I was 19, the week before I started college. I contracted it from boyfriend of 3 years through receiving oral s*x. My boyfriend at the time was my first boyfriend and the person I lost my virginity to, (and he lost his to me) so it was a huge shock when I got diagnosed.

When I got diagnosed I felt extremely alone and isolated, as stigma around STIs are huge where I'm from. Honestly for me it was freephone helplines that kept me sane.

Even now 3 years later, my mental health does get affected when i experience outbreaks, but thats okay, cause I realise what it's in relation too and I can manage it better.

Physically, I do still experience outbreaks about every two months. Its usually my bodies reaction to being run down or stress. My period also usually brings on an outbreak too. I know alot of people who have herpes maybe asymptomatic or have very rare outbreaks, but I'm not one of them.

I do hope in time the outbreaks will be less frequent. A side affect for me is that when I'm about to get an outbreak I get a high temperature and sweat so much when I sleep. Which is annoying except for when your waiting in the cold for a bus.

My dating life has had a dramatic change since I got diagnosed in 2017. I am now single and have to disclose my HSV 1 status to anyone I might have s*xual contact with. But in someways its a blessing in disguise. It makes me picker and I choose to open myself up to people who are open minded and that deserve me.

My advice to my past self or anyone newly diagnosed is LOVE YOURSELF.  You have contracted a very common virus, and it can make your life a little more awkward but thats manageable. We learn to live with herpes, but it does not define us. Its a permanent uncurable virus, that will most likely be with us until we die, but we won't die from it.

I am so proud of my beautiful s*xy strong body that is resilient in coping with herpes simplex virus.
