Thinking about joining a choir?

Join us for a welcoming ๐—–๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ & ๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ฝ where youโ€™ll rehearse quality choral music, sing alongside current members, and experience the sound, spirit, and rehearsal style of the choir - all in a relaxed and supportive environment.

This session is designed to give singers a genuine feel for what itโ€™s like to be part of Cรณr Comรกin: the music we sing, how we rehearse, and the strong sense of community that underpins everything we do. Harmony singing is at the heart of all choral music, and this workshop offers a chance to experience that first-hand.

Whether youโ€™re returning to choral singing or simply exploring something new, all singers - men and women alike - will be warmly welcomed.

As Christmas draws near, I would like to take a moment to thank all of my students and their families for your support, commitment, and encouragement throughout the year.

It has been a real pleasure to work with such dedicated learners โ€” to witness progress, perseverance, and a genuine love of music growing week by week. Music asks for patience, discipline, and heart, and I am deeply grateful to families for the time and care you invest in supporting that journey.

I hope the coming days bring rest, joy, and meaningful moments together, and that music continues to be part of your Christmas โ€” whether through listening, singing, playing, or simply being present.

Wishing you all a peaceful and happy Christmas, and every good wish for the New Year ahead.

Warmest wishes,
Derek

A new wave of research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is challenging one of todayโ€™s biggest parenting trends. While many families rush to enroll their children in computer coding classes, MIT scientists now suggest that music lessons may do far more to boost brain development and overall intelligence.

The study reveals that learning musicโ€”whether through playing an instrument, singing, or reading musical notes, activates and strengthens areas of the brain responsible for memory, attention, problem-solving, and language skills. These neural networks overlap with those used in math and reasoning, giving children a deep cognitive workout that coding lessons canโ€™t yet match. Music education engages both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously, forging connections that sharpen focus and enhance long-term learning abilities.

While coding builds logical thinking and digital fluency, it typically stimulates fewer brain regions and relies more on repetition and structured problem-solving. Music, by contrast, combines creativity, pattern recognition, and emotional expression, creating a richer and more versatile mental environment. Children who play instruments or participate in music programs often show stronger academic performance, improved verbal abilities, and better emotional regulation.

Researchers also emphasize the social and emotional benefits of music. Playing in an ensemble or practicing with others fosters teamwork, patience, and communicationโ€”skills critical for success in any field, including technology. By developing these qualities early, children gain confidence and adaptability that can help them thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Importantly, MITโ€™s findings donโ€™t dismiss the value of coding. Rather, they highlight music as a foundational tool for brain growth. A child who starts with music will likely learn coding more easily later, thanks to the enhanced memory, creativity, and problem-solving skills cultivated through musical training.

For parents, the message is clear: encourage your child to explore instruments, join a choir, or take music theory classes. These experiences not only nurture creativity but also lay down the mental wiring that supports all future learningโ€”including technology.

As the digital world expands, it may be music, not machines, that gives young minds the strongest foundation for innovation and lifelong intelligence.
