After a two year hiatus we enjoyed our annual celebration all the more today. We had a record number in attendance and plenty of awards, in the form of these cute badges for students to display on their kumon bags and serve as a reminder of their achievements every time they take out their homework bags. And maybe even serve as motivation to strive for the next award in the series! Days like today are a wonderful opportunity to pause, stand back, recognise the progress made and to appreciate the daily hard work of our students, their parents and our team at Kumon Douglas Study Centre.

Thanks Padraig, very interesting and love that final reveal at the end!

I'm so excited to see the children back in the centre today and seing the wonderful progress made as they powered through the Kumon maths and English programmes from home these past few months. Their independent learning skills - a cornerstone of the Kumon philosophy - have amazed me and I'm so proud of each and every one of my students.

Today is Ireland Reads Day - hope you managed to squeeze in a read! Some great suggestions here from our local library and the wonderful resource that is Borrow Box. Reading has certainly helped our family through the lockdown and provided an escape to a world beyond our 5km!

February 😅 Well done to all of our students on remarkable progress throughout the month of January. I'm so proud of each and every one - seeing the homework records coming through, video/WhatsApp communications and the positive feedback from parents have really helped me to stay positive while we can't work together in the centre. Stay safe and please don't hesitate to get in touch - I love to help.

I’m so proud of the confident, capable student Ameer has become. He’s such a worthy recipient of this special award!

Ameer has taken just five years to complete the entire Kumon English Programme; an endeavour that’s all the more impressive given his young age of just 11. Since joining the Kumon Douglas Study Centre he’s developed fundamental skills that enable Ameer to excel at school.

Thanks once again to all the families who joined us this morning for our annual party and ASHR awards. We had an impressive performance of a heavy jig from Leann, a record number of ASHR medals, a very special completer award for Zohra who shared her Kumon journey with the audience and a chance to chat and mingle. It’s a lovely occasion to celebrate the daily dedication of all the students. I forgot to take a photo of the truly beautiful cakes generously baked by Mariam Martiashvili - they disappeared before I had a chance to turn the camera on and by all accounts tasted just as good as they looked! We’ll see you back in class next Saturday 2nd of November.

It’s not the first time I’ve posted about the power of the pencil but it’s such an important message for the times we live in. Another recent survey has backed up the theory. Research commissioned by the Education Endowment Foundation, and published in the Times Education Supplement found those who followed a pencil and paper literacy programme made 50% more progress than those completing the identical, computer based course. Academics believe that the act of producing work independently from memory, without the prompts provided by a keyboard, forced pupils to engage with their work more closely. As a result, this helps them to commit their learning to their long-term memory.

According to a recent study, children learn better using pen and paper than they do using a computer.

Thanks to all the students and parents who attended our annual party this morning. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the daily dedication of students, parents and staff at our centre and to give ourselves a collective pat on the back. We had some inspirational words from one of our students, some medals awarded to students studying 1, 2 and 3 or more years ahead of international standards and a very impressive heavy jig from Leann, a double gold medal winner for her maths and English and a champion Irish dancer on top of that!

Plenty of food for thought here...

Long summer days leave lots of time for books. What's the best way to encourage kids to take advantage of that time?

03/07/2018

We've considered the important role maths plays in sport.
