Our 6th Class students, along with their teachers, organised a fantastic sports day for the whole school yesterday. The children enjoyed a huge range of activities and thankfully, the weather played its part. Many thanks to Éire Óg as always for the use of their facilities.

Local Historian Neil O’ Mahony visited both 6th classes recently to discuss the huge depth of local history in the area. In a wide ranging and very interesting presentation, Neil spoke about the rich industrial heritage of the area, Art O’ Leary and Kilcrea Abbey, hedge schools, Kilumney Railway Station, Kilumney Dance Hall, the creamery, the old school building and many other topics. It was fascinating eye opener for the children to hear about our heritage and history of times past. (In the attached map, the current school is marked in red)

Both 5th classes enjoyed the glorious weather in Kilcrea Friary recently. Conor O’ Buachalla from The Heritage Council and Heritage in Schools gave a wonderful presentation on the abbey’s history and told some very interesting stories. He was ably assisted by Neil O’ Mahony who had some real gems of local history knowledge, recited some Latin and Irish poetry for us and the children were enchanted in this beautiful setting. “Ancora imparo”.

Huge congratulations to all of our athletes who proudly represented the school today at the Cork City Sports. Making it to this stage is a massive achievement in itself, and every competitor gave it absolutely everything on the track and field. A hugely successful day with everyone performing fantasticly and plenty of silverware coming back to Ovens. We are incredibly proud of each and every one of you. Ovens abú!
