If you have a little one who is nervous about going back to school after the holidays. Here are a few little pocket-sized ideas that might help!

Pocket Promises:

Write out little promises of treats for your child (for example, an extra bedtime story, a family movie or puzzle night, homemade popcorn, trip to the park or playground, they can pick their favourite dinner) and put them in a jar. Every morning your child gets to pick out a pocket promise and cash it in when they get home from school.

Pebble in my Pocket:

Find two very similar pebbles, gem-stones or crystals. You keep one in your pocket and the child keeps the other in their pocket. Tell them that any time they feel a little nervous or are missing you they give their pebble a little squeeze. It is a very concrete reminder of their connection to you. [Some alternatives to a pebble that they might like to keep in their pocket are a little photo of mum/dad/family, or a hankie with your perfume/aftershave on it]

Worries in My Pocket:

Talk to your child about any worries they have about starting school. Write the worries down on pieces of paper. Then you put the pieces of paper in your pocket. Tell your child you are going to carry their worries for the day while they are in school, so they don’t have to carry them alone. This can really help to ease any fears they may have.

A rainbow in a bowl! 🌈🍬

Today, our little scientists set up a colourful experiment using just Skittles and water. Watching the colours swirl, stretch, and create bright patterns sparked so much curiosity and wonder!

Under the Aistear framework, playful science activities like this bring Exploring & Thinking to life. As the children predict what will happen, observe the colours move, and talk about cause and effect, they’re building early STEM skills and a natural love for discovery.

Science has never looked so sweet! ✨

Little hands, big discoveries! 🌿✨

Planting seeds is such a wonderful, hands-on way to support early learning through Aistear. As the children scoop soil, handle delicate seeds, and water their pots, they’re nurturing their fine-motor physical development while exploring big science concepts like growth and change.

Watching their seeds sprout teaches them patience, responsibility, and a gentle love for nature as they care for something all their own! 🌼🌷🌻

Ready, steady, go! 🏃‍♀️✨

During our school outing at Kia Ora Farm, our little explorers took on the ultimate obstacle course! Climbing, jumping, and balancing are such a fun way to support their physical development under the Aistear framework - building essential gross-motor skills, balance, and spatial awareness while boosting their confidence and resilience.

It’s amazing to watch them figure out each challenge, cheer on their friends, and grow a little braver with every leap. Pure joy in motion! 💛

🌱 The Magic of Getting Messy! 🪵✨

When little hands dig, squish, and splash in our outdoor mud kitchen, they are doing so much more than just playing. They are exploring raw textures, building confidence, and discovering how their world works.

Through these rich, hands-on outdoor experiences, children actively explore their environment, develop creative thinking, and learn to make sense of the world around them.

A little dirt washes off easily - but the learning and the memories last a lifetime 🌧️🐜
