This sketch illustrates just one of the many changes that take place in the female body during pregnancy: changes in posture.

As the belly grows in pregnancy, the centre of gravity shifts forwards. To prevent herself from toppling forward, the pregnant woman must adapt her posture.

So, typically, in a pregnant woman we will see the top of her pelvis tilt forward (anterior tilt) so the lumbar curve increases. Her upper back may round a little too (kyphosis). To maintain this postural change, various muscles are held in lengthened positions (red in the image) or shortened positions (blue in the image) for extended periods of time.

As you can probably imagine, this affects how the muscles function. As the muscles are held in a lengthened position for a long period of time (months!), they lose power and become weaker. As the other muscles are held in a shortened position, they lose elasticity and length and also weaken. Overall, this may inhibit mobility, contribute to instability and may cause discomfort.

This is one of many reasons why a yoga practice is best adapted during pregnancy. For example, lots of downward dog with straight legs can be great in pre-pregnancy, but would only further lengthen the already longer hamstrings during pregnancy. Instead, a practice that takes into consideration the needs of the changing body is important. The use of strategic yoga asana and modified asana to help maintain tone and length in balance in the muscles can be hugely beneficial.

Here are some photos taken here at the yoga studio earlier this summer of the lovely Adrienne demonstrating a few of the new postures we're adding to our training manual this year. These postures are part of the Subtle Body module where we explore the chakras and vayus and consider their importance and impact on the physical, mental and emotional bodies and vice-versa. We will consider too how they may be affected during pregnancy and how working on them may affect the pregnant woman.

In our practice, we'll explore a range of techniques to connect with and stimulate the chakras and vayus, helping us to develop an experiential understanding of them while allowing for learning, clearing and growth, which we can then pass on to our yoga students.

This new material is based on Subtle Body and Energy Medicine Yoga training that I undertook during the last year and a half with the incredible Veronica Larsson (www.veronicalarsson.com/). This mind-blowing work had an enormous impact on my own well being, healing and growth and I am eager to continue share its beauty with others. - Shelagh
