Impressive Speeches for Nenagh Toastmasters

Our last meeting was held on Tuesday 20 th February in the Abbey Court Hotel at 8.15pm and on the
night we had a great attendance, including four guests. We had three speeches on the night. The
first speaker Lian gave a speech entitled ‘The Meta Crisis’. The second speech was delivered by
David with a speech entitled ‘Cos Play’. The third speaker Donnchadh gave a speech entitled ‘The
Reason Behind The Decision’. All of the speeches were very different and interesting. John Spillane,
Joe Ryan and Willie Grace provided positive evaluations to the speaker assigned to them and offered
suggestions on possible ways to improve for their next assignment. Evaluating members speeches is
a big part of Nenagh Toastmaster’s Club. They give the speaker encouragement and suggestions on
how to improve for their next speech. It also gives the Evaluator an opportunity to improve listening
skills, analysing, speaking and reporting skills. On the night meeting roles were fulfilled by Danny
Doyle Toastmaster, Helen Spillane completed the role of Grammarian. The Grammarian role each
night is to keep check on our efforts to eliminate or reduce what is termed ‘crutch words’ or ‘filler
words’ as we speak. Operating our timer lights was Tess Weldon and at the end of the meeting Sean
Butler delivered the General Evaluator report. Our work of the night was ‘Super’ and with this, we
are challenged to include this word as we speak and so we learn to structure what we say. After the
tea and coffee break we had our topics session. Very entertaining topics were provided by Rowena
Bisschoff and in this section we are challenged by the Topicsmaster to speak on a given topic for two
minutes without the chance to prepare our answer. A selection of the topics on the night – Who
does the moon belong to? If you were to come up with a new challenge to get people to donate
money for disease research like the ice bucket challenge. What would it be? Our next meeting is on
the Tuesday 5 th March in the Abbey Court Hotel at 8.15pm. Guests are always welcome. Please feel
free to join us on the night.
