A new study has revealed a concerning link between daily screen use and speech delays in toddlers. Researchers found that children who spend significant time on tablets, phones, or TVs each day were 49% more likely to experience delays in speaking and language development.

Experts explain that screens provide a one-way form of communication. Unlike conversations with parents or caregivers, screens cannot respond, interpret, or engage in real-time interactions. Children need back-and-forth communication to develop vocabulary, understand social cues, and practice forming words and sentences. When screens dominate their attention, these essential skills may be underdeveloped.

The study emphasizes that it is not screen time itself that is harmful, but the absence of interactive, human communication during critical developmental years. Simple changes, such as limiting screen exposure, encouraging storytelling, singing, or talking with toddlers, can support healthy language development.

Parents and caregivers are urged to engage with children actively and provide opportunities for real-life conversations. This research serves as a reminder that early childhood development depends on interaction and attention, not just exposure to information. Screens can speak, but only humans can listen and teach children to do the same.

Screen time is not harmless, even when it comes in the form of educational videos or apps. Research shows that excessive exposure to screens can increase irritability, tantrums, and difficulty with emotional regulation in young children.

The developing brain is highly sensitive to sensory input, and fast-paced digital content can overstimulate neural circuits. This overstimulation makes it harder for children to manage frustration, focus on tasks, and self-soothe. Even programs designed to teach letters, numbers, or shapes can have this effect if consumed in long or frequent sessions.

Behaviorally, children exposed to more screen time often show more frequent emotional outbursts, struggle with attention, and have trouble following directions. Their brains are learning to expect instant feedback and constant stimulation, which makes waiting, listening, or calming down more challenging.

Parents can protect their child’s emotional development by setting limits on screen use, prioritizing interactive play, and engaging in one-on-one time that promotes focus, problem-solving, and social skills. Real-life interactions give the brain the slow, rich input it needs to develop self-regulation, empathy, and cognitive flexibility.

The takeaway is simple: screens may teach content, but they cannot teach calm, patience, or emotional balance. Reducing exposure and replacing it with hands-on learning and parent interaction helps children grow happier, calmer, and more resilient.

Children learn about the environment by interacting and playing with natural materials that are all around us. We've been busy on our nature walks collecting leaves, conkers, berries and acorns. After all the hard work collecting them they are put to good use and can create amazing learning opportunities e.g tearing, cutting, matching, threading, painting and sticking leaves just to name a few (fine motor skill development). Other materials and bottle caps are also great for colour recognition, sorting and learning about non natural materials.
