Joe McCormack - Maths & Education Expert Secondary School Maths Teacher, Solopreneur, Author, Accredited Thought Leader in Education (AIBF).

Joe McCormack, an Irish educational expert and Secondary School teacher, has taught Mathematics, Geography, ICT, ECDL, Web Design, Technical Graphics, C.S.P.E, Woodwork, and Science in various Secondary schools and Education centre’s for the last twenty years. Joe has corrected Maths Exam papers for the Department of Education and Skills and has tutored both Maths and Geography in Ireland’s top school for tuition, the Dublin Academy of Education. Joe founded ‘ACE Maths Tuition‘ in 2019, where he provides expert support and guidance in small class environments for Junior and Leaving Certificate Maths students. These classes facilitate regular intake throughout the academic year both Online and in Ratoath. Joe authors and retails ‘ACE Maths Solution Books‘ as well as delivering seminars on a variety of topics in Secondary schools and Universities. Across all subjects, his expertise very much lies in ‘excelling in exams’, ‘efficient revision’ and ‘advising Maths students’. These form the themes for his 2017 publication ‘How to ACE the Leaving Certificate’ (for all subjects). He has had upwards of fifty articles published in both print and online press and currently runs a weekly educational blog for parents and students entitled ‘Joe’s Jotter‘. Joe has graduated with a Certificate in Career Coaching and a Diploma in Personal, Business and Executive Coaching with the Irish Lifecoach Institute (ILI). These qualifications are accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF). This has seen the emergence of the third strand of Joe’s business, ‘ACE Career Coaching‘, where coaching and advice sessions can be booked by all Secondary School Students and their Parents. Joe is accredited as a ‘Thought leader in Education and Career Development’ by the All-Ireland Business Foundation (AIBF) and received his award at a ceremony in Croke Park on September 12th 2019. Joe’s business was one of only three companies nominated for the ‘Local Enterprise Award’ at the Meath Business and Tourism Awards 2019. A “mouse” was put at the top of a jar filled with grains. He was too happy to find so much food around him.

Now he doesn’t need to run around searching for food and can happily lead his life. As he enjoyed the grains, in a few days’ time, he reached the bottom of the jar.

Now he is trapped and he cannot come out of it. He has to solely depend upon someone to put grains in the same jar for him to survive. He may even not get the grain of his choice and he cannot choose either.

Here are FOUR lessons to learn from this:

1) Short term pleasures can lead to long-term traps.
2) If things are coming easy and you are getting comfortable, you are getting trapped into survival mode.
3) When you are not using your skills, you will lose more than your skills. You lose your CHOICES.
4) The right Action has to be taken at the right time, or else you will lose whatever you have.

Nothing comes easily in life and if it comes easily, maybe it is not worth it.

The Jump from TY to 5th Year.

🚨 One thing I wish every parent knew before their child starts 5th Year Maths…

Being good at Junior Cycle Higher Maths does not necessarily mean your child will find Leaving Cert Higher Maths easy.

In fact, many very capable students get a shock in 5th Year. And there’s a simple reason:

The jump is bigger than most students expect. At Junior Cycle, your child may have been able to look at a question, recognise the type of problem and apply the method they learned. Leaving Cert is different.

Suddenly, they’re being asked to:
🔹 Understand much more complicated problems
🔹 Decide for themselves which method to use
🔹 Combine different areas of Maths in one question
🔹 Manipulate algebra much more confidently
🔹 Explain their thinking and show proper working
🔹 Work much more independently
🔹 Deal with questions where the solution isn’t immediately obvious And then there is the pace.

5th Year moves quickly. If a student misses something in September, it can affect what they are doing in October.

Miss something in October and it can cause problems later again. Before long, a student can be sitting in a Maths class thinking: “I understood this a few weeks ago. Why can’t I do it now?” This is why I always tell parents: Don’t wait until Christmas to find out whether your child is struggling.

The first few months of 5th Year are incredibly important. A student doesn’t need to be brilliant at Maths to succeed at Higher Level.

But they do need strong foundations, good habits and consistent practice. And perhaps most importantly, they need to understand that finding Leaving Cert Maths difficult at first doesn’t mean they’re bad at Maths.

It means they’re now playing at a much higher level. The jump is real. But with the right support and approach, it is absolutely manageable. 💪📚

A Level Maths Results 2026 - It’s the most studied Subject. 🧐👀

Maths remains the most popular A-level, with 115,000+ entries in 2026 — a record.

* The proportion achieving A or A* in Maths increased by 4.4% compared with 2025.

* A* grades in Maths reached about 9.6% in 2026, compared with 7.7% in 2019.

* This continues the post-pandemic trend of results settling at a higher level than pre-pandemic years, although nowhere near the exceptional 2020–21 teacher-assessed results.

* Maths is also becoming increasingly popular, with entries rising substantially over recent years.

In short: 2026 has been a particularly strong year for A-level Maths — more students are taking it and a higher proportion are achieving the top grades.

‘I am going to do well in Maths this year. I will start with a positive attitude and keep moving forward.

There will be set backs. There will be topics I may not like, but I will keep showing up. I will go through periods of doubt, but i will keep trying. I will get to grips with Maths and not give up’. 🎯🌈🦁🎢
