➖On this day, 34 years ago, a bomb exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland on board Pan Am flight 103. All 243 passengers and 16 crewe members were killed alongside 11 residents of Lockerbie. It remains the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of the United Kingdom.

➖Following a 3 year investigation, 2 Libyan nationals were arrested and later handed over to authorities by Libyan leader; Muammar Gaddafi in 1999.
In 2001 a Libyan intelligence officer was found guilty of 270 counts of murder in connection with the bombing but was released in 2009 on compassionate grounds by the Scottish government after a cancer diagnosis. He remained the only person to be convicted for the attack after his death in 2012.

➖In 2003 the Libyan government accepted responsibility and agreed to compensate families of the victims a year later.

➡️The Omagh bombing was a car bombing on 15 August 1998 in the town of Omagh in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It killed 29 people and left more than 200 injured; the Real IRA, an IRA splinter group, claimed responsibility for the bombing, which was the deadliest single attack of the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

➡️The motive of the attack was to show disapproval of the Good Friday Agreement ‘98’ which laid out peace terms between the IRA and the British government.

➡️Telephoned warnings had been sent almost forty minutes beforehand but police inadvertently moved people toward the bomb.

🇦🇫Crisis in Afghanistan 🇦🇫

The Taliban
▪️A religious movement and military organisation in Afghanistan. As of 2021 they are estimated to have over 80,000 fighters and are persistently regaining power through the use of extreme violence.
▪️In the 1990s the Taliban held power over nearly 80% of the country and enforced strict laws; public executions and an environment of deep misogyny which vastly restricted a woman’s ability to gain an education and live independently. It was also a time of censorship when television, music and cinema were largely banned.
▪️In 2001 the Taliban were overthrown during the American led invasion of Afghanistan in the wake of 9/11. During this time the Taliban were accused of providing a sanctuary for the prime suspects - Osama Bin Laden and other members of al-Qaeda.

Current crisis:
▪️Fast forward 20 years to Biden’s recent announcement that the US along with other foreign support will be withdrawing their forces from Afghanistan by 11th September 21.
▪️In reaction to this, the Taliban who had been supressed by the threat of these troops since 9/11 have managed to gain strongholds across Afghanistan. Fears now are that the world has turned its back on the people of Afghanistan in means to focus on their own domestic agendas despite a widespread expectancy that without international support, the Taliban can easily topple the government of Afghanistan.

Humanitarian Crisis:
▪️18.4 million people in Afghanistan have been identified as needing ‘urgent’ humanitarian assistance. Food shortages are dire, thousands of displaced civilians have fled to Kabul, Afghans capital in hope that this will be safe refuge- this includes 72,000 children in the last week alone.
