Happy Friday everyone!
This week, we celebrated National Road Safety Awareness Week. With the help of Simon and Friends (Josie, Charlie and the twins, Sara and Sophia), the children learned all about how to stay safe near the road — remembering to always hold a grown up's hand and to stop, look, listen and think before crossing. They learned the Safe Cross Code and played "Red Light, Green Light" to reinforce their learning.
We put our learning into practice on a lovely walk to the park this morning, wearing our high visibility vests. Along the way, we spotted stop signs, traffic lights, a zebra crossing, crunchy autumn leaves, alder tree catkins and cones, chestnuts, a friendly little dog and even a fairy house! The children practiced walking safely in pairs, holding hands and following instructions. At the park, we enjoyed some fresh air and exercise before safely walking back to school, where we waved at the passing cars, who joined in our fun by giving us a "beep" as they passed by.
When we returned, our little chefs put on their uniforms and made delicious traffic light chocolate bars, reinforcing their understanding of the traffic light colours — red means stop, amber means slow down, and green means go.
Lots of learning occurred during this very fun week:
🚦Practical Life Skills: practicing road safety awareness and independence
🚦Social Skills: cooperation, turn-taking, and following rules
🚦Language Development: new vocabulary such as “pedestrian,” “crossing,” and “traffic lights” "alder tree" "catkins".
🚦Gross Motor Skills: walking, balancing, climbing, and coordination at the park.
