What happens when you walk through the doors of a Toastmasters club for the first time?
For Lee Maguire, it started in Dundalk Toastmasters.
Watching the powerful speeches that evening, he set himself a goal: one day, he would win a speech contest like the speakers he witnessed that night.
A few years later, he did.
What he couldn't have known was that Toastmasters would become much more than a place to improve his speaking. It would become a tribe of friends, mentors, supporters, and cheerleaders.
In 2020, during lockdown, Lee founded Monaghan Toastmasters and became its first President. Today, he is on the verge of achieving the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) award - an accolade earned by only around 1% of Toastmasters members.
Perhaps the greatest irony is that Lee has dyspraxia. His journey is proof that we don't have to be defined by labels. With the right support, encouragement, and determination, we can achieve far more than we imagine.

On the 19th March 2021 Monaghan Toastmasters was chartered. It was the only community club to charter during that dreadful COVID year. Creating this club was a dream of and with the help of a small team, a lot of dedication and a great deal of laughs along the way the club was launched with over 70 people attending the online launch event. Monaghan would no longer be one of the only 3 counties in Ireland without a Toastmasters club.
We recently celebrated our 5th Anniversary. Through those short 5 years we have been visited by dignitaries, celebrities, poets and storytellers. We have been blessed to have the most wonderful members where we have learned, laughed and grown together in confidence, building life long skills in speaking, giving feedback and leading teams.
Members come and go, achieving their goals along the way, getting that promotion, developing podcasting skills, delivering a best mans speech, a eulogy, giving constructive feedback that encourages growth and not hurt. But even more than that, it's the feeling of being able to speak more confidently in everyday life.....something we all desire.
Yesterday very kindly facilitated us in hosting an open day so that Monaghan people could learn more about this resource that has been set up to help build speaking skills in the community and we are extremely grateful to the team in the library for hosting us.
We are always looking for new members to keep the club vibrant and growing. If you would like to attend we meet in St Joseph's Centre in Monaghan Town and also online at 8pm on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month and meetings typically last for 90 minutes.
You can DM us for more information or email [email protected].
