Jennifer Horgan wrote in the Irish Examiner this week about why children don’t read, and one line has stayed with me all night:
“In Ireland children still don’t have a legislative right to read and so schools aren’t equipped, and aren’t even legally required, to solve the problem.”
That is the whole thing, in one sentence. Not a lack of goodwill. Not teachers who don’t care — I’ve never met one who didn’t. A country that has never written down that a child is entitled to be taught to read.
So when a child can’t, nobody is obliged to fix it. It falls to whoever notices. Usually a parent, at the kitchen table, at nine o’clock at night, with no training and no idea whether what they’re doing is working.
Worth your ten minutes this weekend. Link in the comments.

“We believe every child has the right to read.”

Kim and Tara of began as two mothers advocating for their own children. Today, they are helping many more children discover that—with the right teaching—they can learn to read confidently.

In this powerful clip, they speak about their journey, the difference the Dcode programme made for their families, and my commitment over more than 40 years to children with dyslexia and reading difficulties.

Crack the Code and share a common purpose: to ensure that every child in Ireland has access to effective, evidence-based structured literacy—at school, when and where it should be taught. Teachers need the resources, the training and the support to do this job.

Because learning to read should never depend on a parent’s ability to find answers, pay for extra help or fight for support. ⚖️

Every child can learn. Every child deserves to be taught. Every child has the right to read.

Well worth a listen.
Kim and Tara from Crack the Code Tutoring bring a powerful perspective to this Work Well Live Well podcast on understanding dyslexia.
As parents, tutors and advocates, their message is an important one: every child has the right to learn to read.
Reading opens the door to education, confidence and opportunity. When a child struggles to read, we need to ask whether we are giving them the right teaching, at the right time, in a way that works for them.
Kim and Tara raise challenging questions about how dyslexic and struggling readers are supported in primary education. Their central message deserves to be heard: we can and must do better for children who struggle to read.
Huge admiration for two parents who have turned their own experiences into passionate advocacy for other children.
