“The very loneliest place in this country.”

So thought the renowned Irish naturalist Robert Lloyd Praeger when writing about the Nephin Beg mountains. Yet he also found this wild and remote landscape deeply “inspiriting.”

This week, our first-year Outdoor and Environmental Education students, guided by our fourth years, spent a night bivouacking in this special and remote part of Mayo.
..there is something about our night in Letterkeen ... the simple pleasures of slowing down, sharing time with others and paying attention to the many other forms of life with which we share these special places. If only these places could vote?

One of those magical Achill Island days.
Our Level 3 and Level 4 students were out on the water for their Canoeing Ireland Sea Kayaking Skills training, making the most of near perfect conditions and an incredible Mayo coastline.
Launching from Darbys Point, the group paddled and “eddied hopped” their way towards Achill Beg, working against the incoming tide and putting their developing sea kayaking skills into practice.
From there, it was across to Clare Island for a well earned sunshine lunch before heading back across the water to Darbys Point to finish a hugely enjoyable and productive day on the water.

Mountain Skills training with our first-year students in Achill.

There is something beautifully brooding about the Achill sky at this time of year ... almost melancholic. A remarkable landscape for a first day learning to navigate through the mountains.

Fantastic news for ATU Mayo Kayak Club!

The club has been awarded €2,000 from the SPAR & EUROSPAR Community Fund, recognising the enthusiasm, commitment and ambition of these student paddlers.
