โNothing.โ
Young children can find a big, open question difficult to answer โ especially when they are tired after a busy day.
It does not mean that nothing happened or that they do not want to talk to you. They may just need a smaller question to help them remember.
Instead, you could try asking:
๐ What made you laugh today?
๐จ Did you draw, build or make anything?
๐งธ What did you enjoy playing with?
๐ซ Who did you sit or play beside?
๐ Did you hear a story or sing a song?
โญ What was your favourite part of the day?
You do not need to ask everything at once. A snack, a little quiet time or talking while doing something else may work better than asking questions the moment they come through the door.
Sometimes children also share more through play than through a conversation. You may hear bits of their day while they are drawing, playing with toys or acting out a story.
What question gets more than a one-word answer from your child?
