THE HIDDEN COST OF RUNNING A CHILDCARE SERVICE

What happens behind the doors when nobody is watching?

When people think about running a childcare service, they often see the children, the activities, the learning experiences and the smiles at pick-up time.

What they don’t see are the hours that happen before the doors open and long after they close.

They don’t see the provider responding to emails late at night, preparing paperwork for inspections, managing staffing challenges, balancing budgets, navigating funding schemes, completing compliance requirements, organising training, dealing with maintenance issues and planning for the week ahead.

They don’t see the weight of responsibility that comes with caring for children, supporting families and providing employment within local communities.

Across Ireland, thousands of childcare providers continue to deliver exceptional care and education every single day. They do so because they are passionate about children and committed to the communities they serve.

But passion alone cannot sustain a sector.

Behind every childcare place is a business working hard to remain viable in the face of rising costs, increasing responsibilities and growing operational pressures.

At the Federation of Early Childhood Providers, we speak with providers every day. We hear their concerns, understand their challenges and bring those realities directly into meetings with policymakers, government departments and decision-makers.

Because good policy starts with understanding what is actually happening on the ground.

The viability of the childcare sector is not simply a provider issue.

It affects children.

It affects parents.

It affects the whole workforce.

It affects communities.

And it affects the future of early years provision across Ireland.

What is the biggest hidden cost or challenge that people outside the sector rarely see?

We’d love to hear your thoughts below.

As always, link to join is in the comments below πŸ‘‡

What perfect weather this week for planting some seeds! We looked at the different steps for getting those seeds nicely embedded. We used little scoops for patting the soil down, we sprinkled the seeds in then poured just the right amount of water to start the process off! We can’t wait to watch how they grow! 🌱 πŸͺ΄

St. John’s Ambulance Swords was yet another amazing visit this month! πŸš‘ The paramedics showed us the inside of the ambulance, all the equipment and let us try out the stretcher and the seat! πŸ§‘β€βš•οΈ πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ
They even had a baby with them to show the children that there was nothing to be fearful of when needing medical assistance! 🩺 😷 πŸ’‰ πŸ€•
A huge thank you to the crew from St John’s Ambulance Swords for taking the time to come and visit us πŸš‘

πŸš’πŸ”₯ What an AMAZING day we had with the Firefighters and Fire Engine from Swords Fire Station! πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’πŸ‘©β€πŸš’
The children were SO excited to climb aboard the huge fire engine, sit in the back seat 🚨 and explore all the special equipment! The biggest highlight of all was getting a turn to spray the fire hose across the farmer’s field πŸ’¦πŸŒΎ β€” there were lots of smiles and laughter πŸ˜†
A huge THANK YOU to the incredible team from Swords Fire Station for taking the time to visit us and teach us all about fire safety and the important work they do every day β€οΈπŸš’
Definitely a day to remember! βπŸ‘
