Exciting new Local Training Initiative at CDYS Macroom, called 'The Good Lives Project'

2014 sees the launch of a new, exciting Local Training Initiative at CDYS Macroom, called 'The Good Lives Project'. This is a partnership between the Education Training Board (ETB) and CDYS. This exciting new programme will offer a FETAC Level 4 Major Award in Applied Employment Skills with Sports and Recreation or Horticulture. This is a recognised qualification on the National Framework of Quali

fications. The aim of the programme is to provide learners with key transferable employment skills, or to enable them to progress to further education and training. The transferable skills include an ability to communicate competently, both verbally and non-verbally. Learners will also develop relevant numeracy skills and the ability to design and implement action plans to assist them along their chosen career path. Throughout the programme learners will be given structured opportunities to gain greater knowledge of self and how to interact positively and effectively with others.

CDYS Macroom Good Lives. We had a lovely walk around Fota Island Fota Wildlife Park with some of our students yesterday. We avoided the thunder and lightning, had some great chats and were wowed by the incredible wildlife. It has been a great year with all our students achieving success in their studies, all done in a relaxed, social and supportive environment. We are currently enrolling for our 2025/26 QQI4 Retail Skills programme. You can register your interest on the FETCH portal. Simply login, search for Macroom Goodlives and apply. We are recruiting for new learners at The Good Lives Project for the upcoming 2025/26 academic year. We are delighted to be running QQI 4 Retail Skills. This will give learners a solid grounding in an employable market area. There will be practical and theoretical learning. This is an ideal opportunity to learn new skills or upgrade your CV. CDYS Macroom Good Lives Project had our first and hopefully annual sports activity day in the beautiful Macroom sunshine today. Activities were basketball shots, Connect 4, darts, frisbee target throws and a quiz.Thank you to the learners for getting stuck in to it and Damien for helping figure out the scoring system - the toughest job of the day!! Who would have thought that Connect 4 could hold such drama and tension!! 😂 We all found new skills and ALOT of competitive spirit!! Great craic and no damaged egos.....not much anyhow!! Better start practicing the Frisbee for next year.

A beautiful day for tree planting at the Demesne in Macroom. Our learners at CDYS Macroom Good Lives Project got to enjoy the sunshine and company of Ted Cooke. As always we learned loads about history, biodiversity and the connection between people and nature. Ted brought enthusiasm and two trees, a wild cherry and a holly. We shared many laughs and much joy over a tasty picnic lunch. Thank you to the Demesne Trustees for allowing us the opportunity and their continued support of the project. It is a wonderful amenity for the community.

Just finished a wonderful relaxing informative workshop with Majella O'Riordan from here at the CDYS Good Lives Project. Transforming herbs and oils and everyday "weeds" into tasty snacks (the nettle crisps were amazing and definitely moreish!), salves and oils. All our students are looking forward to soaking their feet tonight in the foot salts we all got to take home. I certainly can't wait and looking forward to a good night sleep!
It has been a busy few weeks here at the project, and I will have more updates to follow.
We are recruiting now for new students to our QQI course for 2025/26. I will post the course details next week once I finalise the modules. Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts.Take care Denis

Delighted to have had our art exhibition today. Congratulations to our students on producing stunning pieces and this beautiful video promoting community value in Macroom. Thanks once again to Áine at Macroom School of Art for her work and guidance. Thank you to Cork Education and Training Board for their continued project support. Thanks to Rami and the staff at KOOL Macroom and Macroom library at the Briery Gap for accommodating us. The art is on display at the Kool Cafe for the next few weeks and the video is on YouTube. CDYS Macroom Good Lives Project is delighted to present an exhibition of our artwork next Wednesday 26th February. Huge thanks to Áine at Macroom School of Art for guiding us along with her energy and knowledge. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We will be in the Kool Cafe at 12.30pm displaying our art pieces and then in Macroom library at 2pm showing our short film about Macroom. If you are passing, call in and say hello. See you then.
