Life Drawing @ The Studio
Saturday 19th October.
We are really looking forward to this!!
A good drawing is the ‘bones’ of any painting and Life Drawing is hugely beneficial to the artist, allowing us to study the human body; focusing on proportion, tone, form, and composition.
Working from life forces us to make swift decisions..
This is a great opportunity to improve drawing skills.
We are running two sessions-
Morning and afternoon and there is limited availability in both...
A little poem to start our Autumn term... really looking forward it! 🎨🎨🎨
Classes resume at The Studio on Monday 30th of September.

Love this, every January...
"Turner, a landscape painter of genius, was a phenomenon as much as an artist, a driven, obsessive worker with a boldly independent vision. He is forever associated with the sea, and with light."
It's that time of year - January means Turner here at the National Gallery of Ireland, and our exhibition is open in the Print Gallery only until the end of this month. Admission is free!
Happy New Year Artists!
Painting starts next Monday, 14th January.
So looking forward to starting again.

Artist: Robert Indiana
The word spells love. But the picture is far more than a word. That lovely round O, beside the upright L and carried by the bracing E, takes on a bodily form. It swoons, it leans, its head has been turned. It flirts. It has been knocked sideways by love. The American pop artist Robert Indiana created a pure and concentrated modern pictogram with this surpassingly famous painting, lettered in the colour of love against a blue and green landscape. The image has sold by the million, a valentine for our age. Love – what else matters?
Have a great weekend!

Since I moved to Dublin two months ago, I’ve been looking to feature an Irish womxn on WAW. Ironically, it took my friend back home in South Africa, Zandri Oosthuysen, to make the introduction! Sallyann Beirne is an oil painter based in east Galway, whose exquisite work captures the subtle, hazy beauty of her surrounding environment.
Upon viewing Sallyann’s paintings, you are immediately struck by her intimate knowledge of both her subject matter, and her medium. In other words, the careful, layered way in which she captures the “sense” of her scene indicates her mastery of her medium. It’s unsurprising, then, that Sallyann has been working with oil paint for the past twenty years. Although Sallyann worked mostly as a printmaker when she was studying at art colleges in Dublin and Cork, she moved onto oil painting after graduating. Then, after a post-grad in education, Sallyann worked with a private art school in Galway. She left the art school last year to start up on her own, doing similar work on a smaller scale.
This means Sallyann has had more time to dedicate to her painting. For example, she recently attended the Florence Academy of Art summer workshop in the UK, where she met Zandri. Sallyann notes that, no matter how many years of experience she has as an artist, she is always looking to up-skill, to try out different avenues, and seek new inspiration. This comes across in Sallyann’s work — even when you look over the different paintings she has posted on Instagram, you can see how her interests, and focal points have changed and developed. As Sallyann puts it, looking at her work over time, is like looking at a visual diary of her life as an artist.
One of Sallyann’s more recent works, “From the Stones,” conveys her curiosity in using colour to suggest the mood, and softness or hardness of a scene (Image 1). In contrast to the strength of colour that Sallyann uses in some of her other work, here she mutes, blends, and fades varying shades of greys, mauve, and even hints of yellow and blue, to soften the mist that almost envelops the entire canvas. Yet, hidden in the colour of the scene, at the very centre of the work, are two dandelions that emerge “From the Stones”. Soft white dots of white drip down from the dandelions, merging with the hazy curtain of light that cushions, and then trickles, its way down to the bottom of the composition.
In this way, Sallyann captures the moody atmospheric nature of her wet Galway surroundings. However, on a more profound level, her clouded representation of the scene resonates with the transience of memory, and the subtlety of loss; reminding me of AR Ammon’s poem:
When the sun
falls behind the sumac
in diffuse evening shade
half-wild with loss
any way the wind does
and lift their
off their stems
