Our first Mayo workshop!

We have been in business for 6 years since March and today was the first day to get to Mayo! What a morning!
Apparently there was a thunder storm there last night which worked wonders for us this morning with blue skies and gorgeous heat!

Thank you Culmore Toddler Group for a fantastic morning hunting for bugs, making nature crowns, making a splash in the water trays and for the gorgeous wind streamers too! A morning of exploration and fun!

Week 3 of our Summer Programme is on tomorrow in Knockvicar, Roscommon. We're going to be Garden Explorers in Knockvicar and what a perfect setting with a lovely kitchen garden onsite.

I have 11 weeks left before I mark my final workshop and each week feels like another little chapter ending somehow.

Come join me in these final weeks as we explore, discover and create with nature ✨️

Handful of slugs anyone?

I can promise you that if I didn't work with kids and have my own son, I would never have been able to do this.

I've worked with kids for over 15 years and I'm always trying to make sure that I don't put my biases and dislikes onto other children. It can be hard and when my son first started his slug hunting days, I felt a gurgle of nausea in my stomach but he and many other children have healed me of my initial dislike of slugs and I now view them with fascination and genuine curiosity!

I also love language and using as many different words to help children (and grown ups) describe our slimy friends in a more neutral and positive way.

Neutrality is key when working with kids and I try my best so when we were in Knockvicar on Friday and the kids proved themselves to be expert slug hunters, I wanted to support that and show how we handle them as well as how we release them so we don't come back to dried slugs in the containers the next day.

These slugs were released in the neighbouring field so they didn't continue feasting on the cabbages they had already filled up on.

Our Summer Programme has now started in Knockvicar, Boyle and tomorrow Castlerea will have started too. Contact the FRC directly if you'd like to join us.

A micro universe on an old tree stump. Lichen and moss are clearly seen here but think of the thousands of micro organisms and mini beasts who call this home!

Stop to look at the tiniest of habitats next time you're out with your little ones or even just yourself and see how many things you can count.

This is a great exercise if you're keeping a nature journal too.

We found a snail today! You can see the tarmac under our feet and there is very little vegetation at this particular spot as it's in the town so I knew we'd be limited with what we could find (there's also no nearby walkways for us to use so we're making do with what we have). In the end, we found spider webs, woodlice and a snail! Honestly, we don't need hundreds of bugs and insects to get our little minds excited!

Magnifying glasses were being used, little legs were toddling around looking for all sorts and there was genuine awe and wonder in sparkling eyes today!

We potted up some French Beans in our decorated pots ready to be nurtured at home.

Our Spring Programme is getting off to a great start in Roscommon, all thanks to and Roscommon CYPSC!

This programme is putting a big emphasis on adult-child relationships too. We want the learning and connection to continue long after our workshops!

Tuesdays - Roscommon FRC
Wednesdays - Ballaghaderreen FRC
Thursdays - Boyle FRC

Contact the FRC directly if you'd like to join the remaining 3 weeks of our Spring Programme in these locations.

Busy little bees this morning in looking for insects and seeds in a very cold and windy spot towards the castle 🏰

We didn't go home defeated though! We found some worms 🪱 and grubs as well as potting up some hawthorn cuttings for all the families to watch and care for at home.

Our Spring Programme has been developed to foster togetherness, connections, and curiosity for the world around us in the children and grown-ups alike.

Contact the FRCs directly if you'd like to book in. We're looking forward to the next few weeks exploring nature with you!

With spring in the air and our first programme starting next week in Castlerea, Roscommon we wanted to share some info about this upgraded series of workshops. We will be in a number of family resource centres in Roscommon over the next few months running our Spring programme followed by our summer programme.

We have created a more concise programme hitting on all the questions and concerns I get asked about when I'm promoting nature play.

I'm working with Roscommon CYPSC to deliver these programmes and I am beyond grateful to Bernadette for her trust in Mud Bugs to promote outdoor connections through our work.

Venues and dates will be added soon. Stay tuned!
